you use your 2x2 grid to make a work bench that is 3x3.
The idea is simple, you use that 3x3 to make a 4x4 workbench then use that 4x4 to make a 5x5 work bench. each time requiring more materials to make, making the finial one would require a reasonable amount of time to get the materials, after all is it not a bit odd that you can upgrade all the way from a wooden pickaxe to full diamond armour, yet still have the same workbench for both?.
I'm going to assume you know how to make a 3x3 workbench.
to make a 4x4, you get a workbench and frame it in iron.
to make a 5x5, you get a 4x4 workbench and frame it in obsidian and add a redstone welding rod. (its just for looks and a reason to use other blocks)
the last workbench not only has a 5x5 grid to work on, but has a small chest-like interface for storing tools and raw materials in a convenient way. shown below ( being a storage slot and being a crafting space)
I might add pictures at a later date.
this means to make a 5x5 workbench you have to get 11 iron, 2 redstone dust, 1 gold, 8 obsidian, 4 planks 1 diamond and a stick. its a lot but its not made to be something to thrown together in 5 mins, the last workbench is made for the real crafter.
now please comment, all feedback is good feedback. unless your a troll.

I am a Brony - grown up fan of My Little Pony. If your ok with this, im ok with you. If your Not ok with this, im still ok with you.
In fact, if you dont like Bronies or the show, im happy to discuss it with you.
How do people keep suggesting this when they still have absolutely no clue what would be made on it?
This idea has been thought up 100 times in almost as many different variations on how to do it. The fact of the matter is that a larger crafting bench is simply NOT NEEDED. Every possible suggestion that has any business being in minecraft can be done on a 3x3 grid or smaller.
Don't know, well let me enlighten you. Its to make a 5x5 crafting bench.
Whats a 5x5 crafting bench for?
Simple, its a status symbol. You can sit in your hutch at night admiring your 5x5 and wondering why you used all that material for something that can only craft the same stuff a 3x3 does.
NOW doesn't that sound like something Notch would dearly love to include in his game? Wouldn't everyone playing minecraft happily have Notch abandon working on the Aether to make this instead? Of course they would. Now lets all get on board and agitate for its inclusion in the next update.
