i've been playing minecraft for some time, but i'm still mining using a pick and shovel. sure i could tnt some, but i'd have to kill a lot of creepers to do any serious mining.
i'd like to see a few more mining styles. they used to do actual mine with water pressure (eg. wash away dirt blocks to get to the minerals underneath, we'd need some kind of water gun)
and drilling (needs to be quicker than mining with a diamond pick axe).
it would have to be a vertical drill if they did otherwise it would be OP but as for the water gun that would be cool but more on the lines of a preasure gun so you can put sand in or water
I'm not sure if new ways to mine quicker is really needed. If we think about it from a gaming perspective it would actually be better to slow it down. Maybe add a new kind of blocks inside mountains that can only be removed by the use of TNT (obsidian light), or have large areas of clay where a support structure is needed to avoid a cave in.
Had pickaxes been harder to get a hold of, the player would started the mining by simply using the shovel to unearth the stone for the off chance to find coal or maybe even iron in the top layers. Then with better technology (pickaxe) you can go a bit deeper, then later on you can get even deeper by gathering TNT, and so on.
The old mining technique of first heating the rock with fire and then cooling it down with water to make it crack could also be used as a step between manual labor and the use of explosives.
Right now you can punch your way straight down to the obsidian with your bare fist if you want, no tools or preparations needed.
I think it would give the player more satisfaction if it was harder to reach the bottom layers.

you're right, it needs to be a progression (more tech more depth). it took humans some ingenuity before we could get to be deepest depths
