Now's not the time to introduce myself. Tonight, I bring an idea that will more than likely get shot down. It's still worth the try.
Example of a spinning wheel from Wikipedia.
The idea is known as the spinning wheel, a marvelous device that spins wool/hemp/cotton into string. As of now, the only known ways to procure string is through the slaying of spiders and dungeon pillaging. This is not exactly very efficient for the newcomer, as he has little time to prepare for his first night out. The production of bows and fishing rods can be done quicker, but also has its drawbacks.
The formula is specified right here (requires a crafting workbench, providing a 3x3 grid):
The wood planks make up the wheel, while the sticks provide the footing of the appliance.
This spinning wheel will take up a single voxel of space, just like an ordinary bench or furnace. Usage of this wheel is the different point. It works similar to the furnace, just placing wool in a box and take time to make a single string, but the player cannot multitask to work on other important business before sunset. He/She has to remain at it to acquire one string by pedaling it (not done manually).
After approx. ten-twenty seconds tops, you now finally have one string per wool. If you plan on using it to fish, note that fishing rods can take damage for casting. Keeping extra wool stored in a trunk would help.
There are also odds that this would be better suited for a mod.

All these pony-based signatures aren't going to win these people any respect.
I wasn't intending on ease, but more of a variety...and decor for the spinner.
Maybe one thing I should've mentioned is the creation of twine, which filling a 3x3 grid completely, makes one wool.
Then again, this brings the discussion of yet another item to the party.
