In my opinion, a very useful feature would be homing beacons. Right now, we can simply build visible beacons by creating a tower and placing some lights at the top, but what about underground beacons to help connect tunnels? I think having a recipe for a tool to create a placeable beacon that a compass-like object will ALWAYS point to would be a wonderful item to have.
Now that the basic idea is there, I will try to go into detail. Each beacon crafted comes in two parts: The beacon and the receiver. Once the beacon is placed, the receiver becomes activated and always points to the beacon it is part of. Obviously, tracking on the X plane is simple, but you would need Y plane tracking as well, which can easily be done by having an arrow point up or down on the receiver based on where the beacon is located.
You can even take it one step further by tracking the Z plane just by making a number readout of the block distance you are from a beacon. It would be smart to put a max distance on it to save space, (maybe 999?) and just make it count down once you get close enough.
If tunnels are connected, a beacon like this wouldn't be necessary...
Yeah, thats the point... If youve built a tunnel deep underground, and pretty far out, it would be much easier to place a beacon there, go above ground and excavate an exit. It would also be very helpful with marking landmarks without having a huge lighthouse in every direction on your map.
I have to ask, though, why using any sort of beacon would be necessary to build a tunnel that already has entrances and exits?

What does everyone think about this?
