Well the title and description say it all. What think ye all of the idea of cooking pumpkins for orange dye?

Hmmmm, red and yellow flowers make orange dye. They're everywhere. Pumpkins are rare and have the added bonus of becoming Jack-O-Lanterns which are not only brighter than torches but can also be used under water. I wouldn't even cook pumpkins to make pumpkin pie if it gave me 10 units of health.
The only way you're likely to ever be able to make dye from pumpkins is to make a mod to do it yourself.
You still need to use coal, which while abundant, is still a extra resource for a simple dye. I do agree that yellow flowers, and lapis lazuli should make green.
Great points about the rarity of pumpkins. Didn't even think of that. What I was thinking of was alleviating the heavy use of red flowers (a finite resource for all practical purposes and infinite world notwithstanding).
Red flowers need to make: red, pink, purple, magenta, and orange dye.
That is a very heavy burden on just one dye source, so I was trying to think of one small way to easy that burden.
But I suppose y'all are right. The rarity of pumpkins makes this impractical.

Agreed. Cactus is too precious for mob grinders, unless you farm it.
The thing is, its not that hard to get a ton of cacti, you just have to farm it. And charcoal is also a renewable material in MInecraft. Si green dye should never run out. Yellow flowers, while fairly abundant, do run out, however, and so will Lapis Lazuli. I don't think it would be too horrible unless you're aking something huge though.

ModeratorI agree with this. It would have also made more sense for Notch to have green dye be made from blue/yellow sources rather than cactus blocks.

Cacti are cheap.
