I suggest adding a Split-Flap Number Block to the game. You've seen this kind of display before. It's that type of clock that flips little flaps of paper to change its number.
The block would appear blank on 5 sides, displaying a number only on one face. It would be operated a bit like a note block. When struck, or when it receives a redstone signal, the number would count up or down. By right clicking on the Number Block you could switch it from either counting up or counting down.
The block would be able to display ten different digits: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. When it counts all the way down to 0, or up to 9, it would loop around and start counting all over again.
This block would be very useful in creating clocks, counters, and many other things. And I think it fits the feel of Minecraft; although split-flap displays are a relatively new technology, there's nothing that complex in there. Just clockwork and flaps of paper. I don't think it would be out of place the way an LCD TV would be.
P.S. A split-flap letter block might also work, but with 26 possible letters instead of 9 numbers it would be much harder to use.

So you could pick A, N, F, and have it just flip between those 3 letters. But that would require a more complex interface.
I just think a letter block is problematic if it has to run through all 26 letters.
