I read about the 2x2 crafting idea and it got me thinking. Do we really want to learn 2 ways to craft the same items? Then thinking about how easy it is to make a crafting bench I thought do we really need a seperate crafting bench at all? My answer came back no, we should be able to do all our crafting from the inventory screen. After all, as we can 'craft' many items in the inventory screen already it isn't such a big leap to be able to craft everything.
So what happens to the existing crafting bench? Simple. Many have already asked for a way to repair their tools and armor so the crafting bench gets converted to a repair bench. That way all existing crafting benches in our games become repair benches so that the only cosmetic changes needed would be to the inventory.png and crafting.png. Yea I know, I have my own terrain pack too and I would have to change both those .png's but I think it would be worth it not to have to place my crafting bench everytime I need to make another pick or boat or whatever it is I'm doing at the time.
I've seen many ideas on here that are all about letting us make stuff faster and this would definitely do that. I've mocked up a 3x3 inventory screen which fits and doesn't look overcrowded. Also an idea on how a repair bench could look too. If I can figure out how to upload the pics I will. In the meantime I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
This is a good idea, but I believe that the crafting system now greatest reflects reality.
You can only hold so many items in your hand at once, crafting requires a surface on which to work.
3x3 seems a little unrealistic. I couldn't build a bed or a door easily in my hands.

Of course it seems unrealistic, but most things in minecraft are. Its all about streamlining the way we play minecraft. If you want realism then when you do crafting you should have 2 empty hands, not as it is now with you carrying anything you want. In real life you don't need a bench to make things on, it helps but you can get by without it just as you can eat on the floor but its easier to eat at a table.
Anyway, thanks for putting forward your opinion, its appreciated.
I like it how it currently is. It makes so you naturally progress as you want to make bigger things. It also makes you either carry one with you, or set up a base or system of bases depending on what you are doing. I personally disagree with this and the 2x2 crafting grid idea.

why would you even post this.
not having 3x3 with at all times means you cant just make a sword when things attack you.
crafting benches aren't expensive so stop whining.
and no repairs.
make minecraft harder not easier.
The reason it is the way it is, is mining and spelunking. If you could create anything on the spot, would you ever really need to carry wood with you for a crafting table? Makes things too easy man. So many times I'm in a mine, pick breaks and I'm like "ok just make another on- oh damn I don't have a table on me. -notes to bring wood next time-"
Its just too easy if things are this way. Could work but I dont like it :smile.gif:

Clearly the NO's have it. Them's the breaks. Just thought I'd put it out there after reading others talking about wanting to be able to craft faster like whacking in the ingredients and selecting maximum and hey presto 10 picks are made. Whoopee, ohhh, shoulda checked first to make sure I had 10 free slots available in my inventory.
Then there's the 2x2 brigade. They want to be able to make tools in the inventory too and I thought if we're gunna go down that path we might as well at least keep the crafting recipes the same and the only other way to do that was a 3x3 inventory.
Personally I just tend to carry around a crafting table wherever I go and spare wood. The only problem of course is forgetting to pick the damn thing up afterwards. The good part of course is you wind up with crafting tables littered about everywhere you go. Bit like chests really, especially when your low on health and you find some pumpkins. Bang down goes the table and another chest is made cause pumpkins are worth their weight in gold, at least they are to me. Then its remembering where I put that chest days later when I want to pick them up. Well enough said on the subject, time to get back to my game. Currently I'm running through 4 recent games trying to find the one where I left 20 pumpkins in a chest in the middle of a big field. Will I never learn?
