I was building a bridge across a large body of water when a creeper got me. Everything was lost in rather deep water. Could I make it back from my distant respawn spot in the time limit to find all my stuff? I did and found myself diving at night with the only light from the bridge above me.
That got me thinking that the underwater realm is not exploited enough. I'd like to see some way to breathe under water as well as some underwater lighting. I don't know what the current maximum depth is, but I'd like to see it reach bedrock.
Also I'm not sure what the purpose of passive squids is. I'd much rather see the oceans be more threatening realm… like adding sharks that can attack where deep water meets the shore… or a bridge… like orcas snapping seals off an ice flow. Maybe with such water mobs the land mobs can stop walking on water as they do now.

Which raises a question, just how deep are the oceans? I know when I switch rendering modes, I often first see zombies beneath the sea... obviously zombies in caverns beneath the seafloor. Having the maximum depth reach down to bedrock would prevent tunneling beneath some of the seafloor.
The deepest I've seen a natural ocean be is 7 blocks.
Seriously? Only 7 blocks? Yikes. I don't seem to have any nearby deep water in my current world, I'll have to find some. But getting back to my original point, I think having deep oceans and some way to breathe in and light up this underwater world would open up some new dimensions in Minecraft... under water structures for instance?
Mojang haven't created a way to make moving lights (like holding a torch and it emits light).
I did read that somewhere, probably in the Minecraft Wiki. But even if they are not moveable, with a small code adjustment underwater flares should be possible.
"Notch commented via Minecast that Sea Monsters are a possibility. Particularly, he noted the possibility of sharks, but has recently stated that he would not be releasing sharks as it would be too difficult for the players to deal with."
(Not arguing or anything, just an FYI)

Yes, if the sharks could attack from any side or angle, it might be way to difficult to defend against. But perhaps the attacks could be limited to the same depth level... and make sounds so we can tell when they are near, ready to attack, and from which direction (with stereo speakers). Like ground based mods, they can swim aimlessly then every 20 seconds or so rise or sink to a lower level.

i think he means it was at 7 blocks above bedrock...which is still a little unbelievable.

No I believe he meant the deepest ocean depth was 7 blocks period. I've found some areas where it's 9 blocks deep, but nothing deeper so far. I'd build a bridge out from shore then drop sand block off it until they broke the surface. And man it's dark down there. I think the light filtering factor needs to be adjusted to make it a bit more transparent.

you can also make jack'o'lanterns which stay lit when placed under water. that way you don't need glass and everything. that's what i do
