Adding loads of "magical" stuff that isn't combat magic, I assure you all. It also increases the Nether's landscape from a mere randomosity into amazing.
Let's get started..
Nether: Landscape
Nether landscape will be more barren, having a generally flat surface with deep pits that go deep and large upward forms appearing in the landscape. The ceiling of the Nether is much higher and as random as it is today. Nether pillars, huge cylindrical shapes that reach up to the upper level of the Nether, making them natural staircases.
A pit zone would be a HUGE space going deep into darkness, which is a random mess of formations, making them a natural sight to behold.
Lava pools are small but many, lava falls go into the landscape as if drowning it. soulsand holes are often found. Glowstone often covered under soulsand, but small groups of it still appear on the ceiling.
And now the Nether looks like a hellhole with fascination than randomization.
Nether: Mobs
I have two mob ideas, the Lava Spawn and the Netherrior.
Lava spawn looks like lava on steroids.
They appear alone and spawn in lava. You won't see them because the usually hide under lava. When you are near they go out and try to drag you to the lava. They will grab at you and when they do you will be pushed forward, much like getting fishing rod on you. They have 5 hearts.
Netherrior are the most dangerous threat known to man.
They look like dark shadow with glowing red eyes. Their primary attack is to use a variety of other abilities.
One example is Netherblock. This makes a wall of flame in front of where you will go , blocking you. The flames quickly become Netherrack, and will hinder you from getting away.
It's usual attack is to throw small Netherrack (like the ones when thrown from the inventory) that deals half heart each, and lots of them can surround you for each throw creates 15-30 Netherrack bits.
Also when near it you will be slowed like slowsand so try not to get near or too far, that's his strategy. He has 8 hearts and he can burst to flame and disappear. It drops Portal Shards, which is needed for the idea below.
Nether: Magic
The Nether is a place of horror and suffering, and people know it. Using Portal Shards one can throw one in a already existing portal to widen the time-space rift Nether Portals create (both spaces occupying the same location causes possibility of Nether travel) a portal to a different location that shares the time of the Nether but not the space, the Nether portal creating a portal to there and to the Nether. Entering it is like going through an until portal, you just walk into it. The difference is that mobs already in the Nether isn't there, other than that only a few things are different. Here the magical essence of the Nether is at its highest peak, and here you can channel more magical energies than in the normal realm. Here you can go to the Overworld in an instant, giving faster travel. Sometimes though the teleportation gets messy and the Nether transports you to some other location. How to teleport back? right click on the Overworld with a Portal Shard and also in the magical realm.
I find the landscape section interesting, like the mob ideas but I don't understand the magic section. Besides, Notch isn't going to add magic. Please explain.
EDIT: I was proved wrong. Notch really added magic..
I dont truly like the barren landscape of the nether, because that wouuld take some the challenge out of it. Don't like the lavaspawn, just another dangerous thing about fire, which could get really annoying. The Nethorrior just seems too.. overpowered. And the magic is a good idea, but it'd just be too complex.
I see what your trying to go for here, and its is a pretty good idea, but it needs a few changes.

The magic part isn't really magic, but mind-boggling madness. It's quite hard to explain.. Lemme show you using pictures.
This is you.
This is a Nether portal. Throwing a Portal Shard to it will transform it into a Magic portal and this is the effect:
The Mossystone is the Nether. Actually, it is a door to a Nether without mobs, and entering it will get you back in.. pretty confusing to explain.. anyways it just sends you to a Nether copy without mobs where you can teleport instantly, but using a Portal Shard and the good chance of being sent randomly.
Honestly I hate people like you, trying to be a wannabe noob. So listen here, the thread is apart from what I suggest, and try to stay longer. Idiots.. People like you get on my nerves real deep.

The Netherrior is quite easy. Netherrack is mined by pick easily, Netherrack bits aren't that hard to dodge and does weak damage, Slow effect can be countered by jumping.
The Barren landscape adds more variety and awesomeness, and the regular old Nether is found in the pits I was referring to.
