We should be able to make our tools faster and stronger by making the handles better. They would be crafted the same way as they are now, by putting the materials into sticks first.
Diamond would make the tool strongest- doubling the durability and half the speed
Gold would make the tool faster- 3/4 faster and no more durability
Iron would make the tool faster- half times faster and 1/4 stronger
Stone would make the tool stronger- 1/3 more durability
Logs would make the tools stronger- 1/8 more durability
Your idea is working on the assumption that its the handle that breaks down rather than the material the tool is made of. This can't be the case otherwise all tools would break at the same rate. In theory the handle shouldn't make any difference to the longevity of the tool. Sorry can't support this idea.
long answer: I see very little wrong with the current tier of tools, adding these adaptations just seems to "muddy the water" so to speak. no need to make the system more complex, it would just cause more confusion.
