A grand tree would be a rare type of tree that would grow every so often that would extend very far up into the sky above the clouds. The tree would look like this on the inside with the cobblestone replaced by hardwood. Hardwood could be used just like regular wood but if tools were made with hardwood they would last longer. Also Hardwood could be used to make boats that would not break and could be broken down and picked up. Hardwood could also have other uses in the making of flaming Netherack tools because of its high tolerance to burning.
The finished result would have more leaves and branches but you get the idea. At the top of each grand tree would be a grand sapling. A grand sapling could be planted into another grand tree. A grand sapling would need to have a constant light level of 13 for 3 Minecraft days to grow and would need to be exposed to water to be planted like wheat. I think grand trees could be very rare because it would be so easy to see them if they had grown in an area. Also I think grand trees should only be able to be planted at a certain altitude as to not get extremely short grand trees with chopped off top. I hope you consider my idea, thank you.
on fence about this one, it is an interesting idea to be sure, but the applications of the tree seem arbitrary, and another tier of tools is not necessary. like the hardwood idea, but its uses don't seem original. perhaps hardwood could burn longer than coal in a fire, but not as long as a bucket of lava.
the unbreakable boat doesn't seem fair to me, when I'm exploring generally I go from island to island until my boat breaks then set up a new life at said island. makes me feel like I've been marooned or something similar. perhaps a stronger boat, but not an unbreakable one.
I like this idea a lot! on top of being a great source for wood if needed it could also be used as a decent landmark for when you venture far from home.

You make a good point more tools are not needed and i agree about the boat but i like the burning longer than coal idea.
Was never really sure about the addition of hardwood sticks and planks with this idea but I totally agree with you on the boats I often do the same thing

Edit: To Kingkodfish. Why put the chest in? Just make it a grand apple tree with some apples growing in it.
