Player skins are used by nearly every player in Minecraft and for good reason. I use and design them to take advantage of such a creative aspect as well as to further immerse myself in a game that already requires so much splendid creativity from the player. That being said, I also believe that it's both inconvenient to apply skins and a pain to design them.
I suggest another crafting table that specifically designs skins within the game. The way I imagine it, you would be able to design each bit of clothing separately (shirt, pants, shoes, etc) and they would behave in your inventory just like any other item. I imagine four new spaces similar to armor spaces in your inventory to equip the clothing. This is because I believe you should be able to wear your outfits while also using armor.
The new tailoring table would work like an MS Paint program meaning you would have the utmost creative freedom when designing clothing and in SMP you would be able to design clothing for other players. Items such as diamonds could add textures to your clothes that they wouldn't have otherwise.
Of course, these outfits merely serve aesthetic purposes and make applying skins much easier.
I'm very interested in feedback and suggestions.
Thank you...
What if you could use wool (of any color) in the shape of the corresponding armor piece, which would create a white wool tunic, hat, etc. Placing a dye and the item would change its color. The "armor" would give no protection, but would be great for Team PvP games, or things of the like, without having to make two or three new skins and then make sure everyone has their teams skin and can use it, etc.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
honestly, it's a nice attempt, but ultimately a bad idea to implement in game. as it stands being able to paint the skin outside of the program leaves more time for the game to be played.
that being said, I would love to see a form of clothing that is made out of the natural items we already have. Leaves, (could be made harvest-able in some fashion) could be used to make grass/elvish styled clothing, cloth can be used for more basic recipes, and other things like reeds, and such could be used to craft more ornamental clothing.
depending on the recipe you could have upwards of hundreds of clothes to choose from. They should be worn like armor, after all armor is a form of clothing in of itself. I would like to see a back and glove options added to wearable pieces, so that I can place a shield, bow, or sword on my back as decoration, and gloves, because they make sense.
[email protected] But if any of this is to be implemented, then you should start out with a basic white shirt and brown pair of pants, hopefully ugly, and then you can craft a bunch more clothes, then put them in a wardrobe, crafted like:
, which is the only way to store lots of clothes, although I don't know how this would be achieved. Also, there should be a shoe (more like moccasin) slot, pants slot, and shirt slot only(hats would go in the helmet slot, and any gloves/backsot stuff would be armor or an extra quickslot which you could quickly switch to by pressing "B." You always have pants and a shirt equipped(In case you are wondering), but the "shoes" slot should be optional. some examples of ClothingCraft:
=regular shirt, can be created in any color, but it is more efficient to just dye the shirt after, as it only uses two units of dye
=AWESOME LEATHER CROSS STRAPS OF AWESOMENESS a la Hawkman(DC Comics)
I appreciate all the feedback! Wonderful points have been made. It does make sense that the clothing could be worn in the normal armor slots. I originally thought that, because skins are worn under armor, it would be best to have a separate slot but perhaps that just made the idea to complicated for a feature that wouldn't really help much. However, I still believe that, at least for some players, the ability to design skins in-game would be helpful and fun. Any more thoughts?

@Xegethra That's what I was thinking. I think they should act just like skins you apply outside of the game meaning they look as if they're drawn on the character rather than bulky and monochrome like armor.

I think this is a different idea. I see exactly what you mean and I think it's great for what you have in mind but its separate from my idea of editing skins. Your idea is much more functional while I wanted mine to be more aesthetic. But I like the idea of needing wool to make clothing.

I really like the idea of using the resources throughout minecraft to design clothing! But I think the basic armor design would be to bulky for a regular outfit which is why I liked the idea of using a skin instead. But, what if instead of designing clothes like in MS Paint, you simply designed outfits using leaves, reeds, cloth, etc in the new "tailoring table?" That would make it quicker and easier for the player. Also, the newly designed outfit would have to look like a skin (i.e. painted on the character) so that it wouldn't look as bulky and uncomfortable as armor.
