If flight is ever implemented in the game, by any method, a nice way to balance it would be to reduce your inventory when flying. You couldn't carry anything except the items in your hotbar. In other words, you're limited to 9 inventory slots while flying, whatever the device.
This creates a nice little progression:
Land: rail, with mine cart chests. Inventory is virtually unlimited.
Sea: No chests, but you can carry your own inventory.
Air: No inventory at all. But hey, you're flying!
This makes air travel better for reconnaissance missions, but impractical for ground-based stuff, kind of like in real life.

kinda makes flying pointless, now doesn't it. plus it breaks from the norm that you have inventory. By the same logic, traveling in water should remove your inventory, which means all the items you carry will just drop and disappear.
there are honestly better ways to balance flight, including adding flying mobs or flying hazards to avoid. And given the limitation that most things happen on ground and underground anyways, one will always be landing to explore.
I didn't think so. I think flying could still be used for reconnaissance. And light exploring.

I think we might be getting too reliant on inventory. And I don't see anything wrong with breaking from the norm.

Traveling in water doesn't have the same weight restrictions as traveling in air. I don't think your logic follows.

I'm not so sure about those other ways to balance flight. Once you're in the air, I think it would be trivial to avoid mobs. And how are we going to explain mobs that fly in the air, but never attack you on the surface? That just seems silly to me.

The pen is mightier than the sword, or in this case, the text is mightier than the troll.
You don't think "You're too heavy to fly with all that inventory" is reasonable?
