No longer would the limits of your map be the Far Lands of your world, but the farthest regions of the universe! If you ever get bored on your old world, you could simply build up higher and higher until you pass through the atmosphere of your world into outer space. Before traveling into outer space as it is a vacuum, you would first need to craft a space suit to survive.
The spacesuits crafting recipe would be the exact same as all the other armors except with blocks instead of ingots. Like such.
The helmet would be crafted similiar to a chest but out of glass, leaving one space in the center of a 3*3 crafting grid.
Once you pass through the limits of the atmosphere of the default world you spawn on, you enter a zero-gravity enviroment with your speed and movement similiar to being under water. You would be able to travel to distant planets that you could see and there would be various different types such as water planets with islands and stuff, a lava planet with volcanoes and nether-like, ice wastelands, deserts, more worlds like the default worlds, the aether, and just cloud-gas giants! Of course all the worlds would be much smaller, as if every world stayed at three-times the size of the Earth (as defualt world is now) it would get messy.
You could even build space stations and such in space. There would be asteroid blocks and just space rock floating around you, and upon nearing a certain proximity of it, you would get pulled towards it by its gravitational pull. You could use it as a base or foundation to start your space stations or space cities or whatever on. Other then that, there could be certain things for each type of world.
Examples: Certain mobs for each type of world?
Whales, Sharks, Fish, Crabs for water type worlds
Giant flying things for gas giants
Zombies and ghasts and darker things in nether-type worlds
Sand serpents, dragons on desert worlds
Creepers.....everywhere
Worlds of shadow? Light?
New blocks for different worlds?
Lunar rock to harvest and build with?
Stars?
That's an ok idea. It'd be cool if it was sort of like the planetoids mod, but zero-g? however, basically doubling the size of the world would be hard, so it would have to have another load screen, like the nether.
I'm sure everyone in the history of minecraft has thought of something exactly like this, and a good amount of them have posted ideas without noticing the futility of it. This would create so much lag and generating problems, maps being so much bigger, scripting errors, on and on and on.
Look, I'm not gonna hide it this this time: OP, I hate you. This "idea" has been suggested so god damn many times it's seriously starting to bother me. There is even a megathread for this (that I of course hate) and useing google to look up threads like this is not too hard! I would love to flame you so bad for this that a certain bodypart of yours chaught fire, but luckily for you I stopped with those childish games ages ago. On the other hand, I see noone has flamed this yet, so I'll leave this here so y'all don't freeze to death.

Of course I do not support the idea the slightest. You should just let this die and go look for the megathread.

ModeratorDoes that even work with this new forum software?
On topic: I think Notch added dimensions (such as the Nether) so that he wouldn't have to deal with having to vertically expand the map.
Extending the height of the map just puts too much of a burden on lower-powered systems.
