NOTE: I did minimal research to find out if Longbows, Rods, or Spears were actually thought of beforehand. I imagine they were, but here's my idea anyway. Im also sorry for probably breaking the rule of "No posting 1 or more idea per post." I thought that the Longbows and Spears just went along with my original idea of a rod.
Rods
Rods would be like giant sticks. When you hit an animal or a mob with them, they get pushed back twice as far as they normally would if hit with any other object. Rods would be crafted like so :
Rods are stackable up to 64 blocks.
Longbows
Longbows were my idea of filling Minecraft's desire for a better shooting weapon. we all know guns in Minecraft wont work no matter how you put it, and Crossbows are just too advanced. Back in medieval times, Archers switched to longbows because they shot much further than normal bows. Longbows would be crafted like this:
I think that the sprite for the normal bow should be changes, so we can distinguish the longbow from the normal on, so I thought we could change the normal bow to this:
The long bow would shoot twice as far, and would take 1.5x more time to reload. It uses the normal arrows used by a normal bow, and deals instead of the normal that normal bow & arrows deal.
Spears
Spears would be a close range and middle ranged weapon. Spears are created by doing:
Spears deal when stabbed at a creature, but when thrown by a right click, they go about 10 blocks on a flat plane and a 45 degree angle, and deal . The advantage to throwing spears is that you can pick them up again after the creature has died. Spears are not stackable, and have 112 uses until they break.

Rods would be a weapon instead of a crafting item. They wouldnt be stackable, and would have durability.
Spaman's Edit
"Spears are overpowered. I'd think a thrown spear should do more damage than a jabbed one. Think about hitting a tree in reality. You jab it, its unlikely to penetrate enough to stick. You throw it and its likely to penetrate far enough to stick. Plus theres more risk in throwing your spear and you need to throw more than one to kill a hostile mob. Jabbing allows you to hang on to your spear for repeated jabs.
A thrown spear that does the same or less damage as a jabbed one is less likely to be used for that purpose as you would be required to immediately switch to another held weapon as soon as the spear left your hand."
Spear is overpowered. Give me this spear and I'll never craft another sword until I get diamonds. I'd think a thrown spear should do more damage than a jabbed one. Rod might be handy for some. Should be non stackable though.
Longbow is an interesting addition to a regular bow. Would be interesting using them in conjunction with other,.[when I'm not using my devastating spear that is]
I'm not terribly fond of the rods, but if it is an absolute necessity to the longbow and/or the spear, then I'll live. But I agree with others, it shouldn't be stackable.
