I am really anxious for the maps to come out next week, but when I saw them I noticed that the high view and straight down direction might make it hard to see height. Thereby I propose a Topographic Map.
This is a real life one.
The numbers represent height in feet/meters. A line with the number X on it means that the land residing on that line is X feet above see level.
The crafting recipe for the Topographic Map is:
= paper = inc sac = feather
The feather is there, because it's the closest item in Minecraft that has anything to to with height/flying.
The Topographic map would then display the blocks above sea level (represented as 0 instead of 64 for ease) with inverse colored lines. The numbered lines would be 4 away from each other to keep the map from being to crowded with lines.
The idea of creating a certain kinds of maps sounds really interesting. A topographic map might be quite handy: height of the mountains, depth of the seas ... or at least peaks and the seabed level. Of course you have to make it more appealing: those lines are not informative, as one might think. Maybe the areas higher should be tinted with light colors, and those lower - with dark hues? It'd be also great if one could be able to make his own markers or labels on such a map! Like: here's the entrance to a cave, here's my house etc. Me definitely want it! Cheers
I don't really see how it isn't informative enough, but the different hues do sound like a nice addition.

If you don't like it please say why!
Sure!

That has no numbers to determine how high anything is. That is sort of what i'm going form, but a bigger map that is easier to read.
I see the lines, but there are no numbers to say how high anything is.
