Brace blocks are essentially standard blocks braced in iron. Either Wood Planks or Cobblestone, the original block would have iron around it like so.
This would produce 4 brace blocks.
Now what they would do, basically, is give blocks around them a bonus to explosion resistance.
The brace would have a high resistance to explosions on its own, but is fairly expensive to make. Therefore, say a wood block is placed adjacent to the brace (of either type) it would gain resistance to explosion, perhaps a multiplied value of its original defense. The planks would have resistance akin to cobblestone, from 10 to 30.
Now, the plank has resistance because it is influenced by the brace. This trait would lessen as the blocks stray from the brace. = brace

Of course, cobblestone (and any other block with 30 resistance) has more fortification behind it. = brace
Cheap built-in way to have aesthetics and security...No.
Cheap? Well, relatively, yes, because iron and gold blocks are ridiculously expensive to manufacture in sufficient masses. Obsidian provides security unmatched by any other block, and its hard to get. Braces would be a fair middle ground.

Oi, its not worth struggling for this idea, not attracting too much attention. Anyways, thumbs up for fighting the good fight, always a pleasure. Later.
I agree. But you don't have a diamond pickaxe, you say? Well, that could easily be solved with a bucket, a well, opposable thumbs and a mind! Make a mold, fill with lava, pour water into mold.

I don't know sled teams but I do know I put my dog on an electric treadmill once and dangled a chicken leg. Treadmill puppy ensued.

I keep hearing how hard obsidian is to get when actually its the diamonds to mine the obsidian that is the hard part. Once you have a diamond pick you can manufacture obsidian simply by pouring water over lava. I see the merit of your idea on the basis that it would give players more blocks to make their worlds that would not only look good but have value added strength to them as well. My concern is the number of new blocks that would be required to implement your idea. I'm wondering if instead you could make braces that actually 'clip' onto existing surfaces in a similar fashion to how art is placed over existing surfaces. That way there would need to be only one new item made that could possibly be placed and removed to be reused elsewhere if needed.

I'll just throw out this little thing here.
See, obsidian itself is easy to make in large quantities if the find enough lava, but it takes flippin' ages to mine. The brace would be pre-crafted onto Wood/Cobblestone. In fact, its really more of a reinforced block that spreads its power to other blocks.

Here's the official resistance charts for the blocks: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Explosion
If I get feedback, I'll try to make a skin of the block and add a screenshot.

If you want security, get obsidian.
