So, I was thinking earlier today during L.A. class, and I came up with what I call Dynamic Difficulty. Basically, it add different levels of difficulty that you can tweak to your exact liking. There are three "main" levels.
Creative
Builders'
Survival
Creative:
This is exactly what you would think it is. You get infinite blocks of each type, (basically Classic format) and you can destroy blocks with one click. No health. No passive mobs. Flying would be an option in this mode. It's that straightforward.
Builders'
For lack of a better term, Builders' Difficulty is essentially Peaceful now. You have to gather blocks, it takes time to destroy the blocks, you have to use the correct tools, etc. Passive mobs are on. No flying, and you don't have health. Basically, this is for people that want to build "legitly."
Survival
This is the big section. Basically, you have the options to set the difficulty to Easy, Medium, or Hard (just like now). Here's the catch; you have a new option when selecting your difficulty: Custom. Now, you can control absolutely everything about the mobs. You decide:
What spawns
How often (if all)
How much damage their attacks do
Their competence (how accurate skeletons are, for example)
And finally, their health (and maybe size)
The scale for the sliders would be 1-5, and individual numbers could be figured out later.
Worlds would be in separate folders, but they would be in the same format.
As you can see, there's something to cater to everyone, without having to install mods or change the game. It wouldn't be *too* hard to implement, and would make the community happier.
Sensible Progression
On my walk home today, I was thinking again (what a rarity) and came up with something called Sensible Progression. It adds a very flexible, "forced achievement" type system, that will only allow you to get new materials when you complete a certain goal. There would be "ages" so to speak, which I will now explain. (All abilities stack.)
Surface Being
You can only destroy wood and leaf blocks, and you need 16 wood to progress to the next stage.
Diggy Diggy Hole (or other name)
You may now destroy dirt, gravel, and stone, in between layers 60 and 70. You need to destroy 32 total to move on to the next stage.
Stone Age
You may now craft stone tools, and destroy iron and coal to make torches. You may go down to layer 50. A total of 128 stone blocks mined, or 16 iron/coal mined will allow you to progress.
Industrial Age
In this age, you may use a furnace to start smelting things. You may use iron tools, and you may craft lamps/lanterns. They do not need to be re-lit, unlike torches. You may build up to a height of 90 blocks, and dig to a depth of 20. You need to mine a total of 1024 stone, or 64 iron to progress.
Modern Age
You may now destroy any block, and you may go down as far as you want. The height cap is 100. You may mine Diamond and Redstone now, along with Lapis Lazuli and Gold. You may craft anything, and you need a total of 16 diamonds, 32 gold, 64 redstone, or 128 Lapis Lazuli to move on to the final age....
Space Age
You are now unrestricted as to what you may do. You may mine as deep or as high as you want, etc. There is one catch: you may now build a rocket out of iron, redstone, and diamond. The recipe would go as follows:
= redstone
Thruster:
Cockpit:
Body:
Stabilizer:
Assembling it goes as follows, with: = Stabilizer = Body = Thruster = Cockpit
Now, launching it would bring you to the Moon, which would kind of be like the Nether (in terms of operations). You would go there, and explore/collect moon rocks/that's it. You can build awesome buildings with moon rocks, and make moon rock tools and armor (about the same as iron).
That's all I have for now with the suggestions. Feedback nao!
You don't have to follow the achievements, but they are forced. As in, you could say "screw progression," but if you wanted to progress, you would HAVE to complete the "achievements." Those two terms weren't meant to be connected like that.

That isn't flexible. That's "MEET THESE POINTLESS QUOTAS OR DON'T PROGRESS!"

And it's been suggested, and quite hated, before.
You're still not getting the point. Maybe I wasn't clear, but this will be an OPTION. Not forced. The whole concept. As in, "progression mode on-off", type of thing.
You can play with it on, and just not decide to progress (for happy challenge time), or, you can play with it off and not care. You can fully use it as well.
And, ever notice how the quotas and limitations make sense? At least in real-life terms.
Those reasons are why it was dubbed "Sensible" Progression.
To dynamic difficulty, yes. To progression, absolutely not. Minecraft was not meant to be a game about advancing through the ages. It is about building, mining, crafting, and surviving. How the heck would you make a spaceship when you randomly woke up on a desert island with no other people? That took 6 billion people 65 million years. We don't need limiting technology based progression. The progression, if existent at all. should be based on what it is now: Tool tiers. Get enough materials for the next tools. Minecraft is not and never will be an "Advance through the ages" type game.

Wut.
Incompetence is a plague. I am the cure.
For all your wolf suggestion needs, I present the WOLF MEGATHREAD!
Stories: A Miner's Chronicle, The Lost Chronicle [Entries 32-2, 33-1, and 33-2 out!]
