I've seen some ideas for door locks, and chest locks, but nothing involving just a block that takes a key to activate redstone. I searched to look, but I just got a lot of mods (like the entire first page of the released mods).
Lock Block
= redstone dust
Looks similar to a dispenser, but with more of a "+" shaped hole than a round one. It will output an active redstone current when a key that is crafted with the same material that the Lock block is placed on is in the Lock block (right-click to put key in).
Key
= All wool, logs, planks, diamond, iron (ingot and block), gold (ingot and block), cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, smoothstone, lapis lazuli (ore only), and obsidian.
This will craft a key that if the key that is made out of the correct material that the block underneath the lock block is, the lock block will output an active redstone current.
NOTES:
-Keys made out of ingots need the ORE to be under the Lock block.
-Keys made out of ore blocks need the 3x3 blocks to be under the lock block.
-Keys made out lapis need the 3x3 lapis blocks.
I've been meaning to suggest a lock block and key but have not gotten around to fleshing out the idea...
This specific suggestion seems lacking, you can walk up to a locked door, look at the block the lock sits on (as long as it's not buried), craft a key and move through said door.

This has nothing to do with doors. The lock block is a 1x1x1 block, so the block underneath that determines the required key is hidden.

Having to place a block under the lock to determine what key the block uses seems very limiting. It could be useful on adventure mode but is still very limited.
