alright, i am sure similar topis have been posted in the past, and even i thought of this idea months ago but have only put a pen to paper and considered the possibilities and specifics of these items now.
"What if there were video cameras and monitors in minecraft?" this was my initial idea, i got this idea from the portal mod i saw on the forum home page, basically my idea would be to have a video camera item that could be connected to walls and ceilings and floors with a small stand and the camera (my initial thought was it would be 2 blocks high as to mimic the viewing angle of the character) with a redstone wire from the camera to the second new item idea, a monitor. (advanced technilogical items would require numerous high-level materials to create) now a monitor could be a small 1x1 block/item... or my hopes were for a big screen 2x2 block or even a widescreen 2x3 sized item making it the first of its kind and with game-changing effects now origionally i thought this could be a simple to use series of items perhaps with multiple cameras connected to 1 moniter and changing the feeds with a simple right click.
BUT THEN i thought what if this was just the beginning?! you could for all intensive purposes use simply those two items together but what if in addition to those 2 items there was a keyboard, and a (computer)tower the point of this would be as follows: with a complicated network of wires from your computer to your series of video feeds and ALSO to your complicated mine cart systems AND light switches and virtually ANYTHING using red stone wires or switches, this information could be controlled from an item-specific menu (much like the tool box menu or smelting menu etc.) by simply right clicking your computer tower adjacent keyboard you could access this menu and have a switch-like effect over all the connected items, thus you would be able to toggle on and off to ANY of your iron doors, lighting systems, liquid gates (an idea for a 1x1 door-that allows liquid to be blocked in the closed form and then open to release the liquid-allowing for many more possibilities)
then with the complete series of technology i am preaching here, you could have a visual link into a distant area and complete control of all red stone items around, you could do anything from the comfort of your minecraft home. exaples include: deep in your mines you could send a train of minecarts with engines and boxes to the surface without ever leaving home, you could close iron doors at the sight of an enemy multiplayer faction or enable traps or even directly activate arrow dispensors like remote controled turrets, view and toggle lighting systems from a distance as well as in the actual room from a lightswitch, viirtually anything would be possible and it would change multiplayer in an absolutely crazy manner, allowing for an advanced security system to go with later additions of advanced weaponry such as airplanes guns and the already added nether teleporting.
I submit to you the players, and hopefully Notch himself, a game changing idea that i feel would truely benefit both survival and multiplayer gameplay, increase the demand for teamwork in creating advanced technology that would add fun collaboration and challange to a game that is based (i feel) on the complexity of simplicity, thank you anybody reading this, i would like to add i am just a player who enjoys all aspects of minecraft and have purchased this game in its alpha form and immediately loved the very soul at the heart of this game, many people see problems and frustration with the game but i see it as a new origional game concept with a very strong potential for greatness
i put my honest vote and i voted once (you can allow for multiple simultaneous votes and mine consisted of logic considering the two options i chose,
I know you did, I know you can. You forgot to end your brace, so that sentence had to be decoded. What you voted is none of my business, but it's immoral and misleading for you to post.
your vote could be considered misleading considering you did not mention a single bit of information in my very detailed and thought out idea
giving the impression you did not read a word of it
As a matter of fact, I did skin though your whole post, but your typing made it incredibly hard to understand. Your suggestion is too high-tech and will not be welcomed politely by this forum (me included), it's poorly thought out, been suggested before and there already is a mod for it.
I rest my case, please use search, spellcheck and read the rules.
No. I play MC because it's fun to run around another world and build stuff. I wouldn't want to use a computer in a game that's played on a computer. Takes all the fun out of it.
I do like the concept of being able to see other locations, but in a way that would fit in better with the existing gameplay, kind of like the method arirish was describing.
I kind of support some sort of surveillance item if it's dressed up as 'scrying' or some other sort of supernatural 'eye', rather than CCTV.
The idea of controlling your entire home/mine/whatever from one console is interesting, possibly difficult to implement, and certainly inevitably changes the technological feel of the game a lot (ie, drags things much more in line with modernity, which a lot of people - myself included - are generally against). However, as I said, it is an interesting thought. Again, perhaps it depends on the way it's dressed.
Guns are a no; airplanes too - though I'm not against some form of flying machine/mount; I think we have to take each technological item on its own merits, rather than say 'we have this one, so why not all these?'.
to me the idea that minecraft is a fantasy game is illogical considering the gameplay, it seems to me to be a survival/building game, and the future is multiplayer, that is the future is it not? redstone and minecarts are a human invention just as everyhting else in the game i do not see why guns and cameras are different from basic technological advancements such as diamond swords and minecarts as i mentioned earlier, it simply is the next step the developers would want i assume by the placement of many unused (or barely used) items/blocks like lapis lazuli and glowstone and gunpowder, it seems they are there solely to add another phase of technological advancement, achievable only by having a vast ammount of mines and farms created through a long successful civilization, i do not in any way see minecraft as a fantasy game even though zombies monsters and the nether are not real neither is "redstone" but it is modeled after a real world counterpart, i see the game as the creation of society, the human element
This is a dumb idea. Your playing a computer ON a computer, Minecraft is set in a time where you are stuck on an island with NOTHING. What you're implying is that somehow you can start from a caveman age, and rebuild all the way back up to modern civilization. And besides, the computers that run surveillance systems are much too complex for our measly redstone. The space it takes us to turn on one redstone light is a few meters, while the space it takes to light up one pixel on a computer screen is millimeters, sometimes even micrometers (Millimeters : 1000x smaller, Micrometers : 1000000x smaller). As we have it on Minecraft, there really isn't any "Light Sensing" objects, except for zombies and skeletons when they BURN in the day.
In retrospect, I think this should be a mod, if ANYTHING at all.
no arirish, you didnt mention fantasy, but there is a common belief that you share that technolopgy should be limited in minecraft because it is a "fantasy game", that is what i was referring to, i disagree along with many minecraft players that this game is about building and making cool fun things and without options to create advanced complicated funtions that are easily accessable minecraft wont be that, it will be frustrating and overly simplified, ie. minecarts that are functional but not fluid and practical

respectfully i disagree (much more respect than anyone who has posted in my thread has given me) and your logic is void, there is no time minecraft is based in and caveman age is a made up idea these forum goers have obscessed over, the image for the character has jeans for buddahs sake, and a small stubbly beard its far more likely hes a castaway in a mysterious world, and in multiplayer you can have a collaborative society, i dont see why the developers would limit that creation, the truth is multiplayer and current items show a clear image of how minecraft should be, theres should be comparable but different levels of technological advancement that has current bonuses and a fault of being difficult to gather materials and build, trying to preserve the alpha variant of this game is a foolish endeavor, creating a fun, simple but complex game should be the ideals of the suggestion forum. PS another example of your void logic is how complex u made the creation of a computer it is obvious that ALL items and blocks are an overly simplified basic outline including the basic materials and with multiple blocks creating a computer it is a very realistic addition to the game so i submit that you sir are dumb I SAID GOOD DAY

How? Explain, please!
I already did. You are OP, your opinion is in the first post...
I'm not trolling; I stopped those childish games years ago.
Again, not trolling. I post what I want, you decide weather to read it or not. I have the right to be heard.
