Alright this has probably already been mentioned somewhere before, but I looked through 5 pages of searches on 'coal block' and didn't see anything about it.
So, a coal block would be pretty much the same thing as every other type of storage block, it's crafted by filling the 3x3 box on the workbench with coal:
This would be mainly for storage purposes but it could also be put in a furnace or powered minecart, and it would last for 8x the amount of a normal piece of coal. 8x8 = 64, which is the perfect number for everything Minecraft-related. This is also to give incentive to still use normal coal, because you wouldn't get the full efficiency of the items when using a coal block.
Anyways, what are your opinions on this? And once again, I'm saying that I know that something like this has probably been mentioned before, but I couldn't find anything on it and I did search.
Edit: Just saw the 'Coal Storage Block' topic in one of Kira's lists a few seconds ago. Can't believe it didn't show up before, but whatever. This topic can be either locked as a repeat or used for a new discussion, whatever the mods want to do.
I would really like this. The whole x8 furnace fuel idea may be unattractive to some due to it making smelting much easier, but for storage purposes I whole-heartedly love this suggestion. I've actually filled a double chest with coal before. Having an endless supply of lovely, black fire rocks is a great thing but the space that they take up is very irritating.
Already suggested, but we still need it. I like the 8x's power idea, but some wont.

I also like the extra power it gives. But lets not make it to over powered now, sense coal is highly common.
