I did a little Google searching and I know many people say that we should have backpacks to give are selves MORE inventory but i think you should have to make on first before you can use all your inventory slots. So you start the game and only have 19 slots for stuff to hold, your quick bar and one row in inventory. A back pack would not be a cuirass armor piece or chest plate what ever you want to call it.. It would have a new slot like the armor slots.. maybe under the current armor slots or somewhere else in the inventory screen. Once you equip the back pack you have full usage ability to the inventory as you currently have. It could crafted by completely surrounding a piece of clot in leather? I don't know.. maybe this is too hard? But if it would be as far as put in the game i would at least like to see it on the new "Realistic mode" that Notch is planning to implement into the final version of Minecraft being released in November.
God no. You're right, this is different than other backpack threads. It's different because the other threads don't force a debilitating inventory system on players that lacks any logic or real reasoning behind it.

You are suggesting a player has to collect 8 leathers and one wool to 'unlock' a row in their inventory, which is the way it would probably be implemented in order to save on having 2 inventory icons. Considering how much players want a maximum carrying capacity, collecting leather would simply become a high priority to make a backpack. During the first day or 2 of a new world most of us don't manage to fill our inventory and if we do we simply store our overflow in a chest so the backpack would only serve to have a nuisance value rather than be a useful item.
I'd suggest you try creating a new world and deliberately NOT use the top row of your inventory until you have collected 8 leathers and 1 wool to see if not having access to that row makes any difference to your gameplay before pursuing this suggestion further.

A) Reduce current inventory size.
