I was thinking that it might be cool if another item was added to game. A special sign that added a waypoint marker to the new map system. This sign would also have triple duty as a flash point that you could transport too, allow you to individually select one point over another as a reference direction to your compass, and have places marked by waypoint on the in game map. Rather than the current main spawn point direction... Since our places are spread out on SMP I can only currently use the compass as an off reference. This requires using the compass and referring off screen to a still map and in game landmarks to get around.
I think it should have a cooldown though so you aren't teleporting all over the place. That would be soo cheap if you could just warp out of a cave while your being attacked by mobs.
If you do it like the fast travel in New Vegas, it's a great idea. By that i mean, time will pass, so you might arrive in the middle of the night, if you get attacked by mobs you will have to fight them manually before you continue and you might find yourself low at HP due to falling off cliffs and the like on the way.
Actually I was thinking that the fast travel would be more applicable to when you have wandered beyond all reasonable ranges for pure entertainment. I am totally good with this being on cool down timer. I would only want it after hours of gathering items. Then you find yourself saying WTF where am I and how do I get back. Notably I was gathering things so I was not interested in killing me. At the time the idea came to me originally I didn't know about compasses. So for all intensive purposes I was lost. Having a server command to TP me would have been great. I don't think it would be to difficult to implement this sort of object since it more or less exists already. (When you die it sends you to your most recently used bed... which would be a great place to stamp the waypoints)
As to your argument about it being able to be abused... Well here's how that falls short. As long as anyone else is in game I can TP to that person thus escaping dungeons or whatever. However I particularly like finding them and abusing them with glass walls and lava. Pro tip on this leave a missing block in the glass every few spaces so the spawned creatures actually come at you and fall into lava. PURE ENTERTAINMENT!
Also, on my SMP how does it make any difference what you consider OP. Your not here so it doesn't effect you. If it were created and implemented and you think it would be to OP then don't use it. Again TP to another player sort of bounces that line of logic out the window.
Alternatively in regard to TP'ing away while engaged with hostiles the command could be blocked while engaged with hostiles. I think for that to happen it would not be an SMP command it would be a totem or device in game item.
Some additional thought now that the maps are released.
1) an added material that would show the whole of the explored world without having to re-explore. (Our server is quite vast at this point.
2) A growing map the current one is only able to see a portion of my build and my neighbors before I walk off map. (or some way to combine them.) As far as the later map placement like a painting maybe have a way to stitch them together on the wall. Much easier to make a whole exposed map option.
3) Increase the size of the player inventory craft menu. So we can craft maps on the go. (based on current map method may not be necessary if above suggestions are implemented.)

This destroys the purpose of: minecarts, boats, your own 2 feet. Just walk the extra mile for god sakes...
