Now I have two main suggestions/ items that should be added. They are simple but may add some more depth.
Firstly, when you make a piece of paper, you should be able to write on it like a sign, however to read it, one must right click without pointing to anything, such as how you right click to eat pork. This would be useful because you would be able to write down things like to-do lists, or objectives. This could also be used to display rules for multiplayer servers and would allow for much more writing than signs currently do. Now make a book, and basically you have a ten to fifteen page book that is basically like the paper except it is able to store much more information obviously.
Secondly, I think it would be neat to somehow be able to customize the paintings in game instead of having to use a texture pack. Perhaps you would start off with a blank easel and would be able to paint it pixel by pixel, or to draw it like in Microsoft paint. Or you could then be able to import other peoples creations if you'd prefer to do that instead.
Tell me what you guys think...

Charcoal - The most underrated, unappreciated thing in minecraft. Try spending a whole night without finding any coal, then talk.

Medieval builder and texture artists. Also totally awesome.
I disagree with custom paintings, strictly because Notch would have to code essentially MSPaint into the game, when you can do the same thing already outside the game. Anything bigger than an MSPaint clone is even less feasible as thinks like GIMP or Photoshop had teams of 30+ people all doing the coding, plugins, and all that jazz.
So when it comes down to it. I want Notch to be contributing to the game in a way that isn't just an easier way to do something we already can do very easily anyways. I like the book idea though.

Okay So I've thought about the ideas you came up with and I will admit that you have an idea with this writing yourself notes like with signs. I feel I have an addition to your ideas for books and paper. Would it not be useful to a player who has Internet for short amounts of time for to books hold crafting recipes? For example if you took a book that was just crafted(blank) and put it into the craft bench with Redstone. The book would then show you several different crafting recipes involving Redstone. This could be handy for some players, and would give an incentive to craft books more than just for show. An addition to this would be that bookshelves become more like storage boxes allowing books to be taken out at a whim. This could work well with the idea of having books able to be written in by players.

Although next time, you should search before posting to see if something has been already suggested.
