Rivers have been talked about before and everybody agreed they would be way cool. The problem was that regular water drops every 8 metres so at the moment if you want a river it has to be very steep. People suggested a new type of river water/fresh water with would drop every 20-50-whatever metres. It was thought that 2 waters in the game would be too tricky to handle, so...
A new block. Riverbed/mud/silt/whatever. It doesn't absorb water very well so water would travel further on it. Minecraft could generate a line of riverbed blocks in a slightly sunken line until it meets the sea or a lake.
Maybe?

Ooh, 3 s. I've never got more than about 2 in a day before. If I give them to the mods it'll mean I can swear in the forums won't it?

Simple solution. One question though. Is mud harvestable?

It would be too common for regular clay. Mud could be cooked in the same way to make mud blocks for building? Maybe it would turn to dirt? Or maybe it could be a 'surface' like snow or ice on top of dirt in water?

that's what i wanted to know. it'd make more sense if mud was a covering over the dirt block, that was harvestable with a shovel. but, if you harvested it near the source of the river, then the water will get absorbed by the now-exposed dirt, and only run the 7 or 8 blocks or so until it dries up. but if it hits mud again before the dirt dries it up, it'll flow for a long time again.
Wait!!! What about on rock. Rock doesn't absorb water.
Interesting. Perhaps the base of rivers can be gravel or something instead? That way we save a block ID and it gives gravel more use, which is a common complaint.
