Now, since most people will not accept guns as they say that minecraft is a fantasy game (though plenty of fantasy games include guns), I had a more "traditional" fantasy idea: Magic!
Making use of the books you DON'T need!
So, first things first: You'll need a staff! This is crafted with 1 stick and 1 gem. Simple enough. Now, you need tomes. There are several types of tomes.
1. Light Tome
A light tome is crafted from one book and glowstone dust above it. When cast (right click), the tip of your staff emits a light, equivalent of a torch. It lasts several seconds and eventually dims, to be cast again.
2. Electric Tome
An electric tome is crafted the same as light, but with redstone dust instead of glowstone dust. When cast, it shoots out an electric bolt, which strikes the aimed target, causing some damage and stunning it.
3. Fire Tome
The fire tome uses a flint instead of the dusts. It launches a fire ball, which causes more damage than the electric tome, and has a chance of setting the target on fire.
The tomes can be upgraded by putting a gem next to it when building it. This creates:
1. Focused Light
The focused light causes slight damage, still producing light around you. Any light-sensitive mobs can be light on fire if you are close enough. All hostile mobs slow down.
2. Chain Lightning
Causing more damage than the basic electric tome, the lightning tome can chain from one enemy to the next, causing slightly less damage.
3. Flamethrower
This tome does damage that isslightly higher than the main fire tome, but fires a continuous beam of fire.
A tome has a certain number of uses. Spells also have a chance of backfiring, causing the effects of the spell to affect the player. If Lightning backfires, it can still chain to hostile mobs.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
If you want to light something on fire, don't be lazy, walk over there with flint and steel and start a fire.
If you want to light up an area, move your cubic arms and place a light source somewhere.
If you want to electrocute something, wait for a thunderstorm and hope that what you want electrocuted gets hit by lightning.
Roflcopt...
No. Maybe I don't want to do something like that! MAYBE I'M A LAZY GRIEFER!
No. Jk. But I don't want a flint and steel so I can run up to a creeper and light it on fire! Maybe I want to be GOD! At least I'm not suggesting Telekinesis...
Yet...

Oversuggested, but Notch has already said that there will be ALCHEMY, not magic, and i prefer the former anyways.
Aren't the two pretty much the same?
