the idea is that you give furnaces full grids like a workbench.
when using coal or wood it only crafts 1 item at a time like a regular furnace does
when using a bucket of lava it crafts one each per grid square effectively increasing productivity 9 fold
this allows for multiple objects being smelted at once but requiring lava to do so
edit* the use of lava would have to be limited in the time it can be used. each grid square used reduces the lava's smelt length by 1/9th with a minimum of 1/9th of its normal smelt time...
(getting complicated) my head hurts damn you arirish
well it would only act as a "super" furnace when a bucket of lava is applied, in all other ways its a normal furnace with the option to smelt items in a "queued" method. It reduces the space needed to place furnaces. you are right however that it does take away from having to have 9 seperate furnaces to smelt 9 different materials, although that to me is more of a pro than a con.
it doesnt simplify the game, it would require the same amount of fuel (excluding the lava part) to smelt the same amount of stuff. it just does it requiring less space.
I wanted to add a way to incorperate crafting chain mail in this manner by placing iron ignots in the furnace grid (requiring lava) but not sure how "in demand" that idea is.
This is actually a good idea, I hate wasting time for one ore to finish to smelt another type. now dont criticize me saying "[fore criticism] YOU HAVENT READ THE REST OF THE POSTS THIS POST IS ALL OBSOLETE LIEK -100 [post criticism] " or anything like that. because its true.
Now the thing is notch will probably up the size of it and make it a massive 3x3x3 thing, and will De-OP it by making it one fuel for each slot. cause thats how he is.
So theres that to keep in mind, and theres also the thought that he might make the recipe more advanced, than say, 9 furnaces? it would be more like...
... or something like that.

EDIT: What i'm trying to say in the second part of the post is that there is ALOT of things that the players wouldnt like, rather if its expensive crafting, etc.
