I think it would add to the atmospherics in survival/hard mode if zombies (or spiders?) would occasionally attack animals. The night would be filled with the cries of dying animals. This could be done when the proximity was, say, 3-5 blocks. Animal spawing might have to be increased to compensate up for new deaths.
Agreed, that will give a reason to feel sorry for the animals. I remember my first night where I tried to push a sheep inside my house to protect it from the monsters
Lol, on my first night, I pushed a pig in my house, and then ate it.

Ok, Since in Beta 1.8 or Beta 1.9 Friendly Mobs don't respawn Lots so if Monsters Attacked Animals all the animals would die becuase of the sheer amount of mobs that spawn nightly and you would all starve.

This would make it more important for the player to create a farm though.
I'm not against the idea as long as creepers don't attack animals....
Hmmm... I like the premise, seeing as I myself have experienced the "why aren't they eating the animals" thought.
However, I'm worried that adding a mechanic such as this would /greatly/ increase the difficulty associated with breeding animals for food, leather, etc. I think that part of the gameplay that would be sacrificed to add a new feature to zombies is not worth the tradeoff.

lol yeah I never really understood why zombies drop feathers other than they had to drop something.
Good point! What if eating porkchops made the zombies more damage resistant? LOL

Why not make them run away? Zombies are slow and can easily be outrun to begin with.
