When most people post about making it easier, they always whine about how long it takes. They say the time should be shortened, but I don't think so. If it's possible, I think it should be made so that obsidian doesn't burn up in lava.
This would take quite a bit of tediousness from mining it in caves, where the main thing you need to bother with is making sure there's no lava under the obsidian. So, you spend a lot of time filling all but the top layer of lava with gravel or sand, so that it has a safe place to land when it breaks. (At least, this is how I do it, if there's a better way please let me know.) this way, if you mine it and it falls in lava, you can still pick it up granted you're able to get to it in five minutes.
This also doesn't diminish it's use in multilayer to protect valuables or bases, because it still takes as long to mine and still can't be blown by TNT.
The one downside to this is that you wouldn't be able to dispose of obsidian by throwing it in lava, which is the main way to quickly dispose of blocks. (Still, you could just drop what you want gone and wait around for five minutes for it to vanish.)
Now, if this has been mentioned before, my bad. If not, I'm interested to hear what you guys think.
Interesting, so why not? FYI It is easy enough to mine it without getting it in the lava. Here are some tips:
Option A
Make the Top layer of Obsidian by dropping your water source block near it and allowing it to flow on the lava. Dig out 1 Block like so: []
From there, move your source block with a bucket so water flows down and makes the now exposed lava Obsidian: []
Dig out the newly created Obsidian (stand on the surface to avoid drowning, you can mine 3 blocks down). Either more lava will be underneath and be turned to Obsidian or you will hit regular rock and the lava next to it will become Obsidian: [] []
From there just use careful placement of water source blocks and mine the top layer while standing in the hole. If you do it right, water should always save the block from burning by turning the lava source underneath into Obsidian.
Option B:
Lay a Water Source Block near the lava. Then use the bucket and pick up lava source blocks and place them in the flowing water, mining each one after you do it. Slow, but safe.

Why? All blocks burn in lava. Why wouldn't this one? That's a part of the risk of obsidian mining. If it's a problem, you can use water and lava to create it away from lava pools, then mine it there.

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?

To make it less irritating to mine, as explained before. Other than that, I suppose because it's created in lava, but then again so is cobblestone, which in of itself makes no sense.

You can already make it less irritating to mine.

I've never seen you like an idea, Phantom :biggrin.gif: You'd be an excellent critic.
What about making obsidian blocks float on lava?
I've liked a few. This just seems pointless. You can get the ease you want by using buckets of lava and water.
So basically, no fun allowed?
Obsidian magically surviving lava has nothing to do with fun. So basically, that question's ****ing dumb.
This thread has nothing to do with tedium or else it would suggest a lesser mining time, seeing as that's the tedious element in mining obsidian. The point is to make it EASIER. Methods already exist in the game for that AND they make it less tedious as well. So this concept serves no needed purpose.
Plus, let's say the stuff survives in lava: Who would dive in to fetch it when other methods exist that make the mining easier, less tedious, and with less risk of burning alive?

I'll continue to watch this and see how this develops, so far I'm leaning SLIGHTLY toward a yes.

But seriously, I'm talking about making mining it less tedious. Using buckets of lava and water isn't exactly less tedious.
As far as making it float on lava, that's an interesting idea. I'm not sure how feasible, but interesting nonetheless.
