Instead of always having to build ladders, stairs, or complex tunnels through caverns to find your way out, Why not just build an elevator shaft that will automatically pull you to surface?
The idea would work in the same way as ladders, but you don't need to hold your move key and it doesn't need to be against a wall
This could also be used for new house decor, and whatnot.

To build the box to hold the player [] []
To build the rope that will pull the box up and down
The rope will create 4 pieces which, will take the player up 1 block per rope
To build the elevator stop/ pulley. The elevator will not work without this
[] []
This will make 2, which will be the stops for both
For the elevator to work, a stop will need to be placed at the top of the elevator as well as at the bottom. The stop will need to be attached to the side of a block
Right clicking a stop while holding the rope will attach a rope which, if there's space below it, will add a rope down a layer
The rope will need to make it to the second stop which it will connect its self and make a line going from one stop the other.
The box will need to be placed on a rope, and if suspended in air with no player will go towards the closest stop it's connected to.
To use the elevator, the player may right click the box, which will automatically start it up and send it to the other stop. When the box hits the stop it's heading towards it will dismount the player from it. The player may then be able to right click it again and send it back down to the previous stop.
The player may be shot by skeletons while inside the elevator
Mobs may not enter the elevator.
The shaft walls have the same height as a fence, making it so the player can't jump over the shaft.
With all of the previous entries for elevators. Love it, can't do it yet. Notch needs to implement IBE before this is possible. IBE = independant block entities.
