Currently all we have is a fishing rod, and one type of fish. Nothing more. This thread is a way to expand on this underdeveloped part of Minecraft.
The Fish
In Minecraft there is one type of fish. This fish is also not even a mob, but simply an item. The code for the fish being a mob is (according to the wiki) still found within the .java files in minecraft. Fish should be a mob, as that will allow more things underwater, and makes sense in general.
-The player would not physically interact with the fish, and only be able to get the fish via fishing.
I propose that numerous types of fish be added, and this is my list. (Bait is in next section).
Bluegill- The current fish. No real changes here aside from what has been said above. Has a 25% chance of biting the hook. No bait needed.
Salmon- Similar to the Bluegill, but has a redish patch on the bottom. Has a 10% chance of biting the hook without bait. 35% chance with Bluegill bait.
Rainbow Trout- Silvery in appearance with a pink stripe in the middle, and is more commonly found within 5 blocks of a current. Has a 5% chance of biting the hook without bait, and away from current. 10% chance without bait near current. 35% chance with salmon bait.
This is a way to increase the chance of getting certain fish. It would be done simply as:
= Fishing rod = bait
[]
[]
The bait is just a fish type.
The name of the rod when hovered over in the inventory would be: <material> Fishing Rod <(bait fish)>.
More fish ideas are welcome!
The Fishing Boat
There are two places to fish... on land, or in a boat. For every block traveled in the Fishing Boat, the computer will run a random number generator that uses the chance to get the fish type divided by 10. Holding in the right mouse button on the fishing boat will bring up a 3 slot inventory of the fish it caught. NOTE: You cannot put anything in the inventory.
The fishing boat is crafted like this:
= boat = string
The net of the boat will hang 2 blocks underwater, so you would have to swim out or build a dock to place it. Due to this, the net will collide with blocks and squid. Breaking it will yield all the materials.

Whats wrong with the varying rods? I see where your logic is (I think) regarding the cobblestone ones, but why all of them?
