Alright, here it is: my suggestion - Armor Powers.
What?
Yes, armor powers. Crafting special armor pieces would give the player a special ability when activated. Armor Powers would only be able to be activated when equipped. This is how to use:
Helmets - Right click while wielding a stick
Boots - Always activated as long as equipped.
Why?
With Armor Powers, you could do so many more things! Look down at the Powers section for examples.
Also, I tried to design each one so that the cost is roughly equal to the power given; if you think one or maybe a few aren't well thought out, please comment!
How?
Well, each Armor Power would be crafted a different way, depending on what it does; there would be a special row at the bottom that determines the power. It would still have the base armor shape, however. Also, I'm thinking maybe they would take a bit longer to lose durability by themselves, but using the power (boots only lose extra when power is being actively used) would drain a little bit, the same as getting hit.
The two BASE crafting orders for Powered Armor would go like this, where is a special block only obtainable from either dungeons or boss lairs (if added)(Maybe you would have to go to nether, actually?): Helmets:
Boots: []
Powers!
Alright, here are some I've thought up so far. As I said before, please comment on any you think aren't well thought out...and, really, for that matter, ones that you think are!
HELMETS
Redstone Helmet
Redstone helmets would allow the player to activate redstone circuitry on command, with the source of power being the crosshairs, and the power extending for the usual 15 blocks. Arc of power flows maximum 10 blocks away from the player before stopping (redstone must be 10 blocks or less away from the player).
Cannot be crafted with leather.
Crafting:
= RedStone Dust
Storm Helmet
The Storm Helmet would allow the player to summon a storm on command. When right-click is held for 5 seconds, lightning will strike the block under the player's crosshair, with a limit of 50 blocks.
Cannot be crafted with leather.
Crafting:
= Water Bucket OR Water Source = Iron Block
BOOTS
Climbing Boots
I recently saw a thread (was it in this section? I think it was...) where someone had thought of the idea of sticky boots (crafted with slimeballs), which could allow you to walk up walls.
Here's my take on it.
Crafting:
= SlimeBall
Health Boots
The Health Boots would actively heal the player over time by a rate of .5 hearts per 2 seconds; if engaged in combat (trigger would be losing health; stop trigger would be when health is full)(this would also cause boots to replenish health after falls), the boot heals 1 heart per second until health is full.
Crafting:
= Golden Apple (I think this would be rare enough for the power gained)
Pictures coming soon!
Ideas:
This is a section for ideas I (and maybe others) have. Please share your thoughts regarding them, whether they would be too dangerous, or there is no way to make it not overpowered, etc.
Light Helmet -or- Boots:
Allow player to see in dark - Maybe similar concept to Miner Hat Mod?
Fire Helmet:
Allows player to shoot a fireball at the block/mob under their crosshairs - Definitely needs cooldown.
Green Thumb Boots:
If the player walks over a flower, it spreads to the next block; if the player places a pumpkin, the pumpkin immediately grows to two pumpkins. Also, wheat and plantlings grow instantly if placed while wearing boots.
Wow!

Well thought out idea and nice graphics.
My only issue is that with a lot of these, they're too overpowered for something that is relatively easy to craft.

Indeed. I was trying to think of it while taking a small nap, but fell asleep lol. However, I have a good idea now; instead of putting RedStone torches in the center of the helmets, there would be a special thing you could get from dungeons or even boss lairs (although some consider those too RPG'ish) that would be put in the center of each recipe to make it work.
