This is my list of ideas, tell me what you think, and feel free to comment and improve upon these ideas.
1. First off, stained glass. Use dyes on glass, seems like a simple addition but would allow for some cool building.
2. Steel, resmelting an iron ingot should be easy enough to get the job done.
3. Lantern, made with glass in middle of iron ingots. Carried or place in a mine cart would be notible uses, and powered by torch, or as ill soon mention, oil.
4. Oil, floats on water and catches fire when in contact with lava or of coarse fire. Oil
can be used to power a lantern, make asphalt, or even plastics.
5. Rubber, collected from trees(rubber trees to be exact), and can be used to craft things like trampolines,rubber cement, or something along those lines. Only problem is fall damage from bouncing and acquisition from trees would require a new tool(perhaps a knife made like a sword except with one less block in the blade).
6. Limestone, important to many industries. Would be located around water and has many possible uses.
New materials Cement = clay + limestone
Concrete = cement + gravel + sand + water
Mortar = cement + sand
Quicklime = limestone + heat Hydrated Lime = quick lime + water
7. New uses for clay, things like pots for holding plants or something.
8. Cooking pot/Cauldron, made with 7 iron ingots with a space in middle and top middle. This plus water and fire would make for new food recipes(soups) and maybe potions.
9. Bats, roosted on the roof of caves and producing piles of guano on the ground below. Believe it or not, bat guano is a valuble resource used namely for fertilizer and even as food. In game it would appear much like snow does and the bats themselves could have other functions(pet or small enemy).
10. Ash, spawned after wood and trees burn. Can be used to make soap, melt snow, and help gardens.
I have seen almost every one suggested before, save soap. I saw a thread about getting dirty and washing off in water, but never soap... Elaborate on that idea and scrap the rest and I will get back to you on that.
