It sure is annoying to have to smelt cobblestone to get stone isnt it.
Well illget to the point. By putting 4 sandstone into a 2x2 square, you get gravel. 2x2 gravel gets cobblestone. Smelt that to get cleanstone. This would make cobblestone and stone availible in the nether. Thats 64 sand to one stone. Pointless, but you dont need a pick.

Kill to eat. Eat to live. DIE.
I once asked a friend on minecraft, "If the Nether is where the dead go, where do they go if they die in the Nether?" He replied "Canada."
Its mostly to get cobblestone to get tools, eliminating the need for wooden tools if you spawn in a desert biome. it happens to me alot. its really really annoying. I have to walk a biome to get my set of starter tools, and then i still need to get stone.

So what if you have to walk? Walking just makes use of the wonderful terrain generator MC has.

I think it would be cooler to convert gravel to sand somehow, since sand is really just very worn down and refined gravel and bits of shell. It makes sense according to the 'real' world and would allow a way for gravel to be made into a block that doesn't follow gravity. That and I know a lot of people find gravel really annoying in general.
So if there was a way to 'blast' the gravel down into sand, or maybe mixing it with a bucket of water....
Thoughts?

Just as you said it. Plus... cobblestone is so common... along with coal that anything easier is well pointless.
