Before you are about to post an idea, don't do it yet. Let's say you want to make a douche jetpack in Minecraft.
Step One: Go play Minecraft and imagine some shiny jetpack ruin the wood and stone theme of Minecraft.
Step Two: Think of a way to make it adapt to Minecraft, IE turning it into steam-pack.
Step Three: Go look on the suggestions forum to look at the stickies. Absorb what knowledge you can from skimming and light reading (so you won't be bothered much by reading huge amounts of words)
Step Four: Lurk on the forum topics for a while and note the various posters.
Step Five: Select one or two of these people and PM them about an idea you have, and await whether they approve of it or not.
Step Six: View current threads, see what works and what doesn't. Take note of every information you can (If that has been suggested etc.) and reply to the threads on your own views. See the replies to compare it with the possible feedback you will receive.
Step Seven: Mentally imagine your idea again and then revise, and post.
There, that's my take on getting a good start here.
Or if you think you have a good idea and want to see it in game just throw it up and see what happens.... you'll ether be a genius or you'll be flamed, ether way you got nothin to loose.
