It's amazing the amount of truth that can fit into that word.
This is entirely unneeded. If you don't want them to die, leave them at home. If they do die, go to a biome where they are common with 5 bones. Consequently if they die, you probably aren't very good at the game. I usually only keep 1-2 wolves with me if I use them at all and I can go weeks without one of them dying, even staying outside at all times.

I've had 4 wolves. 2 died because the game crashed, and they were gone. One got caught under ice and drowned, and the last one was deleted with my world... It's not that bad. They're pixelated wolves. Yes, they should at least TRY to keep away from large ledges, but oh well.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
Maybe they should bark only when near mobs. Or whine whenever you get 8 or more blocks away from them
Yes to the first one, no to the second. Although it would be funny as hell for a Youtube video:
*Make wolf sit in glass container*
Wolf: BARK BARK!
*Move 8 blocks away, near a lever*
Wolf: *whines*
*Pull Lever, water slowly fills up the glass box*
Wolf: *whines*
*whining dies off as wolf drowns*
Yes.

Secondly, if you don't want to risk losing your wolf, don't bring it into combat, or have it following you all the time.
