Now I know that technically, I should only be suggesting one item at a time, but all five of these would tie into each-other very well in the following suggestion.
I will now elaborate about the things I listed in the title, in order. Feel free to post your questions and/or concerns in a comment, and if you support any of these following items, please make it known, because I think it would be awesome if even one of these were actually added into the game! If you are still interested, please bear with me, as I have a lengthy explanation to do!
Smoke: This has been suggested by a ton of people, and Notch has even considered it at some point, but I think it could amount to more than just a potential hazard for not having a chimney in your house...
Smoke will accumulate over time, depending on the item it is being spawned from. A single torch would make one smoke block every 30 seconds or so, a lit furnace every 15 seconds, and an open fire every 5 seconds. Upon being spawned, the smoke block will rise at a relatively decent speed, heading for the maximum altitude it can. Smoke, if not replenished on a regular basis (smoke that doesn't make new contact with another smoke block) will dissipate after 10 seconds or so, and smoke that escapes into open air will be removed at a much faster rate. A player that makes contact with a sufficient amount of smoke, (at least a 2x2 bundle of it) will gradually take damage. (About 1 heart every 4 seconds) Smoke can gather in rather large quantities, but will not continue to build up if it is more than 30 or so blocks away from the source, thereby preventing entire caverns from being filled with the stuff.
Soot: Soot is a side effect of large quantities of smoke. Smoke that gathers in such quantities that it touches the floor will generate soot on the ground. Soot would basically look like a darker, somewhat dirtier form of snow, and can be gathered with a shovel, giving the player 1 item of soot dust. Soot serves no major purpose other than an aesthetic one, or as a warning sign for dangerous levels of smoke, but can be crafted into charcoal with the following recipe...

(Gunpowder = Soot Dust)
Gas Mask: A gas mask would allow a player to travel through thick fields of smoke without taking damage. A gas mask would be worn in the helmet slot of a player's inventory, and upon entering a smoke-filled area would gradually decrease in durability. It might be fair to make the mask last about 10 minutes in a smoke-filled room, so it would lose 1 durability per second when exposed to smoke, and have 600 points of durability to start with. It could be crafted like this...

(Mushroom = Leather) (Diamond = Slime Ball) (Skeleton = Gas Mask)
Now, any different recipe would work, but I think it should at least involve a slime ball because A: It could give a crafting use to the item, and B: The slime provides insulation. Although, it might be a cool alternative to also make it so that pumpkin helmets provide smoke protection, albeit for a shorter period of time.
You might ask, 'Sure, a gas mask might be useful, but why would you need one for any reason other than your own clumsiness with smoke-making devices?' To answer that concern, I move to the heart of my suggestion. The glue that holds the rest of these ideas together...
Miasma: Miasma as I envision it in Minecraft, is a somewhat clear liquid with a black tint to it. It acts like water in almost every way, except that almost any creature or player that makes contact will take 1 heart of damage per second! There is a major difference though, in that a miasma spring will spawn a smoke block every second, provided there is enough room to do so! Therefore, a miasma spring inside of a cave will quickly fill a large portion of that cave with dangerous levels of smoke!
Of course, miasma wouldn't be at all common, and would not be generated at any depth above 40 blocks or so. A whole lake of miasma would be even rarer, with less likelihood of spawning than a lava pool at the surface! To deal with miasma, a player would have to either plug up the spring or collect it in a bucket. The smoke would then dissipate over a short amount of time, making it safe for the player to pass through. However, Creepers love miasma, and will spawn at a greater frequency in and around it. they also wouldn't take damage from it, neither would zombies or skeletons, being undead and all.
Miasma buckets can be used to make artificial pools of the stuff, for whatever reason the player would want to do so, and can be smelted in a furnace to make a...
Gunpowder Block: Admittedly, this is the least important item on my suggestion list, but it would be a neat use for Miasma, should that be greenlit for the game! Gunpowder blocks are basically dark Iron blocks, and can be used for decorative purposes. However, once you place the block, you can't really get it back. Instead, mining it will reveal 4-8 pieces of gunpowder. This would allow players to farm gunpowder for making larger quantities of TNT.
And I am finished! I am no game programmer, but I imagine given what Minecraft can do already, that the only difficult thing to pull off on this list would be the smoke. Everything else would simply require a tweaking of already existing code. I sincerely hope that Notch at least sees this chain of ideas, and that the community takes notice of it!
Best regards, and happy Minecrafting!
If you want gunpowder, man up and kill creepers. The rest is...Well, meh. Smoke's alright but suggested before. And torches shouldn't make smoke.
I think you didn't read the part about the Miasma! Not only did I mention that the stuff was rare, and needed to make the aforementioned gunpowder blocks, but the springs are guarded by yes, CREEPERS, that will spawn in great frequency around it!
Also, torches make smoke particles in the game already! Why wouldn't they make smoke?

Because I don't want to choose between an ugly ass chimney or a houseful of demons and smog.
