This would involve two items: a switch, which would operate like a push-button, and a remote control, carried in the player's toolbar (or whatever it's called) that would operate it. The remote would operate the nearest switch to the player, up to a specified maximum range.
This would be very useful for minecart riders, as it would allow them to operate switches without the problems associated with hitting switches while moving.
It would also allow redstone circuitry to be completely hidden, which would be useful not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for such things as hidden entrances, etc.

The stick at the bottom is a red-stone torch...
Wireless remote.
The iron in the middle is a button.
This would be a pretty cool idea to put in minecraft.
