Hey y'allz! I'll make this as clear and quick (and hopefully well written) as I can. I've lamented often while playing Minecraft SSP that gathering mob-specific items (such as gunpowder, string, etc.) requires waiting all day long with no way to skip to night, making said items very slow to harvest significant amounts of (the long wait and risk involved in gaining gunpowder, for instance, makes building sizeable player-made mines very difficult, due to limited dynamite-building resources, and also makes finding ores very hard). While I realize this may work to limit production of quantities of over-powered items such as TNT, it also limits their production far too much (the risk involved in getting gunpowder, string, or bones is a limit in itself, so I don't think a wait-till-night feature would give the player too much power). For this reason I am advocating the addition of a "bed-like" item that has the opposite effect of skipping from day to night instead of night to day.
My suggestion for this item is: a hammock
*possible* recipe:
[empty] [empty] [empty]
[string] [string] [string]
[stick] [empty] [stick]
This item would take up two block spaces, like the bed, and would be activated with a mouse right-click (also like the bed). When right-clicked, the player would lie down on the hammock (with same anim. as bed), and the game would skip to night. The hammock could only be activated in the daytime. This will allow for much more efficient gathering of mob-related itemssss.
The final recipe would of course be up to the devs., but I think a hammock is a very fitting idea for the item (maybe a couch?). Anyway, it really doesn't matter what the item is, but the wait-till-night effect is VERY important to me, and hopefully this idea will intrigue, and be supported by, the forum. Please let me know what you think. Thank you for takin' a look! And please forgive my correct spelling and punctuation; it's such a forbidden thing on the internet, but I like to challenge the norm. Later y'allssss! FTW!!!

Aww, cute little chicke...NO! MAH GAWD YOU RUINED MY CROPS!!! GRRR *slash*...*puff*........"..."........*sniffle*...
The twilight herb also gives a purple pigment when ground down.
When used, the player is knocked out for 8 in-game hours. The herb has a toxic effect so it can only be used once per day to allow it to be purged from the player's system (this is just an excuse to not use it more than once). No actual toxic effect permeates.
Lol, the twilight herb sounds mighty similar to a drug. Still, I suppose it would work just as well. Minecraft+drugs=rated T for mild violence and drug use XD

i like the idea, however hammocks are usually hung from two points, like two trees or something so that it can swing.
a hammock is a bit too complicated, so i think a couch is better.
My idea was to have legs/posts on each end of the hammock, so it could support itself (thus the sticks on each end in the formula). A couch would work well too, but might be kind of out of place in minecraft, since the game is supposed to be somewhat primitive and simple.

Heh, it's a drug in the same way a medicinal herb is a drug in your standard RPG.
Plus the twilight herb is useful in the fact that it can be used at any time to pass time, not just from day to night, but maybe you just want to skip all but the last 2 hours of night. This makes it quite useful.
