Alright, so heres my idea for a MOB. I've worked with the idea a bit to try to make it original and balenced, so tell me what you think. Also, I'm not an artist and I don't pretend to be one, so bear with me.
The Shelled Beetle A beetle that has liived since ancient times, it went deep underground for thousands of years, and its diet on mushrooms has made it's shell rubbery.
Mob Name: Shelled Beetle
Behavior: Neutral (Tameable)
Spawn: On the lower 20 levels of the main map.
Hearts: 3 (If Neutral) 6 (If tamed)
Height: 1/2 a block
Width: 2 Blocks
Drop: Brown Mushroom
Speed: 1/4 the speed of the player
Alright, so as you can tell, the Shelled Beetle lives very deep underground, so it can be hard to find. They are similar to spiders in several ways. For one, they can climb walls, they have glowing red eyes, and they are bugs. But the similarities stop there. Because these guys have a few different tricks up their sleves (Or shells). Lets say your exploring a cave, and you see some bright red eyes in the darkness. Prepared, you pull out your bow and arrow and shot the eyes. However, the arrows bounce off, not affecting the mob, that is now running towards you. You see, arrows won't harm these guys. all other forms of attack will, I:E: lava, Drowning, swords, punches, etc, but arrows bounce right off. They attack similar to spiders, but are slower, and
But Shelled Beetles arn't just a pest, they're also tameable! Now, before you X out of this page or flame, don't worry, these guys arn't clones of wolves.
You see, these beetle LOVE brown mushrooms, and will search for them all the time, eating them underground. If you feed them anywhere between 1-10 brown mushrooms, they'll forever love you, and be your pet. Now, once tamed, they go soft, and will run away when attacked, so you'll need to bring a wolf or two to balence your team, but they'll still go after brown mushrooms if one is nearby, and work as a sheild against arrows. Like wolves, they can be told to follow or stay. And when jumped on, you'll jump 4 blocks high instead of one, and be saved from any fall damage you could have taken. And if you make a water slide or something with a boat, and position the beetle just right, if the boat lands on the beetle, it will jump into the air 4 blocks high. Another thing these beetle can do is neutralize Redstone wires by stepping on them. So if there is a door that only open when the redstone is active, if a beetle stands on it, the current is blocked, and the door closes, making them neat tools to use on PvP servers.
And with these mobs, there is a new item. Here is the recipe.
That creates a mushroom arrow. Will this won't cause any damage, if shot and a beetle sees it, it will pursue the arrow, and eat it, no matter what it was doing. This can be used to put one at the bottom of a cliff for you to jump off on, or get on to the enemies side without you having to got there, or screw up your friends plans.
So, thats the Shelled Beetle, any thoughts or ideas? Overpowered, or Underpowered?
Seems like a good idea, but I think that it should instead be only wild, it is about the size of a Spider, and it's shell is hard, it can take a lot of hits before it dies instead of being immune to arrows. Or maybe it could STILL be immune to arrows?
sooo,....what's the point of having one as a pet? to search for mushrooms? what's gonna stop them from eating them before you get a chance to get it yourself? and since they're a mob, having them be able to help you disable redstone, jump higher, ramp a boat, etc won't ever work; they'll just walk out of the way by the time you get to them.
A tameable beetle? How come since the wolf came out when people suggest mobs they suggest it is tameable.
Because tameable stuff is awesome, adds depth and variety to the game, and can allow for more possibilites for just about anything. And the idea for tameable mobs has existed before wolves were ever mentioned.

Meh, being immune to arrows is already a big defense thing, I don't think anyone would want it to also have to take alot of hits.

No, I doubt anyone would take one of these to hunt for mushrooms. And if you read, I said that like wolves they can be told to follow or stay, and they'll only move if there is a brown mushroom within 5 blocks, or a mushroom arrow within 20 blocks. If there is one, they'll eat it, and resume either following or staying, depending on which they were doing earlier. They can be used to access places to tall to reach, or land safely off the side of a cliff, or even screw up someone's redstone circuitry.
So if you shoot a mushroom arrow off a tall cliff. It will jump off the cliff, and take no fall damage?
No, as mentioned before, Shelled Beetles can climb on walls, like spiders, so they would simply climb down the cliff, they would only jump off of, say, a floating island to get to an arrow.

Spiders don't climb down cliffs though... they just jump off, like the ungodly daredevils they are. Be nice if they did though, and by nice I mean 'make it even harder to lead them to their death'.
Oh, oh! How about if your shelled beetles did jump off, but opened up their shell casing (their wings) to float down like chickens?
Thats... Not a bad idea! It would definatly be faster then having them climb down the wall.
Player: Oh no, I'm cornered by a swarm of creepers! Wait, I know! I'll shoot a mushroom arrow down this cliff, then I will jump on the beetle to safety! Go Beetle!
Beetle: *Walks*
Player: Hurry Beetle, the creepers are coming!
Beetle: *Walks*
Player: HURRY BEETLE HURRY!!!
Beetle: *Walks*
*Explosion*
Beetle: I made it!
And it'll give their little wings a use beside looking good!
I LOVE the idea! This is one of the best ever ideas in my opinion. Too bad that even though i have a tamed wolf its just a waste to have him. But i bet i would always use this!
Its underpowered and thank god to that im fine with anybody wanting these hell make anyhing tameable or friendable but when its as overpowered as a wolf it sucks and makes the game WAY to easy

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.

My tameable slimes idea was made before Beta 1.4... :/
That's quite a good idea, OP. I like the shield aspect, and nervous AI. Good job.
