Also known as mob repellants. Here's my take on this suggestion.
You've built a huge underground tree/wheat farm and garden, but farm animals keep on spawning in it. You could take away the grass, but that seems restricting and annoying. This is Minecraft, we should have more than one way of fixing things!
Now here comes the Animal Repellant. This is a strange totem sculpture that prevents farm animals from spawning in a 30 block radius. It is not collected when broken, so place it wisely.
Animal Repellant
Now here's another, more important issue.
You've built a gigantic glass wall around your fortress in a mountain. Since your land is so big, you can't cover every square meter of it with torches... how do you stop the enemies from spawning?
The enemy repellant is a bit trickier to make. Not only does it require a gold ingot instead of an iron one, but a fresh iron sword is necessary to instill fear in the hearts of enemies everywhere.
Once you make it, you can't just plop it down like the animal repellant. It must be powered by an active redstone circuit, able to be switched on and off. Not only is this convenient for mob traps or hunting trips, but on SMP you could sneak into a huge mansion and disable its repellant, throwing the area into chaos!
When you say "You can't cover your entire land with torches", you don't have to - you just need to keep the average light level above 7 units. It takes a lot of coal but hell, it's a BIG world and coal is cheap. In my spawn world (Seed is "Harry") there are epic mines everywhere so lighting with coal torches isn't an issue.
doesn't work - not enough torches
does work - see placement pattern in snow for better effect

No, I will not subscribe to your channel because you asked... but I might if it's *good*.

Let me know how you like the idea.

Should I change it to a diamond sword?
