So my suggestion here is simple an item that you can through that will bounce once off a hard surface.

deal 1.5 hearts of damage
(Maybe could use better materials for more damage?)
This would yield one discus.
I think like all other tools and weapons these guys wouldn't stack but you could carry multiple, and recover it. You would simply throw it like a snowball. But it would create a voxelated version of the item (Like the other tools and weapons) rather then just using the sprite. It would bounce once off of anything hard it would get stuck in dirt, sand, etc. This would be useful for taking out that skeleton while hiding in cover. Take out the creeper whose about to go off by your back door from safety. Perhaps this could lead to different discus games like say disc golf? I feel this would be a useful little addition that could lead to some interesting stuff.
What happens when it strikes an enemy? Does it return to item state and fall to the ground, or bounce off at the appropriate angle, possibly doing less damage than the initial strike? Would higher tier versions yield higher damage, more bounces, or both? Also, does it take durability damage per hit, or per throw, and do different bounce targets (materials, mobs) cause different amounts of damage to the discus?
Eh I think item retreival would be more suited for a boomer rang.
I was kinda tired when I posted this so yeah not all the details are there.
As for hitting mob it would bounce off at an appropriate angle if hadn't bounced already. This would allow for hitting two targets at once. I feel that for the most part that striking any surface would reduce the durability of the discus the same expect for maybe when hitting dirt. Two durability for bouncing off a hard surface (IE stone, wood, sandstone) one durability for hitting a mob getting stuck in dirt, sand etc.
As I do think if it hasn't bounced already then it could trigger a lever or button. I would say no to the pressure plates.

Make it out of slime balls and I approve. It could also be used in such a way that if you throw it directly down while on a button, it would bounce up and down continually, thereby creating a kind of a mechanical puling mechanism for redstone.
Also, imagine if when it bounces off glass, it would break it. Then put it here:
where is the "discus" and is a button. It would bounce higher every time it hits glass, and the glass would break, so each button press would be slightly longer after the last one.

That's actually a really neat concept. Pressure plates are in. I think though that the slime balls should be an upgraded version. Hurm though how many bounces should the slimed version have 4 maybe?
