I'm sure you may have seen the recipe for an incinerator, which covers a 3x3 area:
Looks like a crafting recipe, huh? then I wondered: what if it was? Granted, it would be nothing more than a block that destroys items thrown at it without harming you (though there could be an interface that helps you send items from your inventory to their doom), and is functionally no better than the "regular" incinerator other than taking up less space, but why not? It takes up less space, and it looks neat (hollowed-out Brick block with lava inside and a slight opening in the front). Would anyone mind something like this getting added (after some more important/cooler stuff gets put in first)?
I like the igniter block better from the trapcraft thread.
I thought that was for hurting people, not getting rid of items...
though that would make an awesome automatic fireplace.
I believe it does both (I assume at least).
Fair enough. Either way, the point of this block was that it couldn't hurt anyone, but yeah, if I had to choose between this and flames at the flip of a switch, I'd go for flames.

Oh... I didn't notice the "no damage" part.
Considering that

Won't damage you when your right next to it... your idea is a bit redundant.

I'm still not sure regular fire can destroy (all) items... I thought only Lava could do that.
Lava flows over the edge, and creates a lavafall in column 3. It goes all the way down to the bottom cobblestone layer. It cannot flow the the side due to the halfblock there.
On the player's side, he cannot hurt himself with the lava, because of the 2 high block clearance being reduced to 1.5 by that halfblock.
That stone halfblock has a double use. Prevents lava from spilling out, prevents idiots from spilling in.
Perfect incinerator. Make it 2 or 3 wide, depending on how much lava you have at your disposal to be more convenient if it is to be a "communal" incinerator. Just make sure not to use wood or wool instead of that cobblestone.
I've heard that one solution is a dispenser facing away from you, you open the GUI and stick all your useless items in it. Behind it is lava, but this poses absolutely no damage to you or your wolves and is easy to use. A redstone clock cause it to dispose of the items.
To summarize, incinerators already exist for anyone who's creative. Building something in Minecraft is far more interesting than having a block that does it all for you. Better suggestions are the ones that add something that can't already be achieved through ingenuity.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways

Game of The Year, Every year

True, but there's still a chance of some idiot falling in and burning himself. This would avoid that, but otherwise be mostly for aesthetics.

Or this, again no danger to you or wolves:
