I took a look through the ideas posted in the sticky, especially in the "Environmental/Geological" section and didn't see anything like this. But I still apologize if this has already been suggested.
I would like to see different types of ore be more/less concentrated based on depth. As it stands right now, below level 19 you have a chance to find everything. That's fine. But your chance to find iron at that depth is just as likely as it is to find iron 30 levels up.
I think it would be more interesting to have different strata have more varied composition. As an example, say you could find iron at any depth below 60, but at levels 30-45 it is most plentiful, with dropoffs both above and below that. It would encourage more varied mining. Currently Lapis Lazuli already functions like this, having a peak distribution around level 19 and falling off in both directions. Technically all the ores do fall off in both directions as you hit bedrock, but it's still essentially a "plateau" of distribution.
As it is, myself and a lot of people I know will just dig a shaft down to around level 10 and start mining out from there. That way you have a chance to find everything, including those coveted diamonds. I would love to have an iron mine or a coal mine or any other type of specialized mine based on the depth.
I'm guessing it's a fairly simple idea, all things considered; just modifying the algorithms for ore distribution.
I agree with this. As a further addition, it would be nice to have certain surface features (eg. biomes) cause certain underground features.
ie. Large concentration of coal at surface level might hint at diamond nearby below.
ie. large concentration of forest might hint at coal
ie. River (yeah, we don't have them yet really, but soon... :wink.gif: ) might hint at gold, also might cause gold to spawn in the river banks at a higher rate.
Yes. It makes sense and would make it better for more advanced players. Newbies would still just mine straight down and then root around until they find stuff but advanced players would scout around for indicator minerals and landmarks and work from there.

Essentially a less random placement of resources.
Glad you agree! I like your ideas too - very cool stuff!!

Check out this graph from minecraftwiki:

I'm essentially proposing the distribution graph would have more bell curves and fewer plateaus.

Thoughts? Some glaring issue I'm missing?

I might have something for you, though not exactly what what you are describing :wink.gif:
