I always find that Redstone Dust takes up a lot of storage space. You get loads of it from mining, and there's not much use for all of it unless you're a Redstone guru and decide to build something electronic on a massive scale (like a calculator).
Now, this has probably been suggested before, but I figured I would at least try and collect some community input on the idea: Redstone blocks.
Simple, right? Nothing particularly fancy. They would be the same as other 'precious metal' blocks. You can combine nine Redstone dusts into a solid, placeable block. It wouldn't really have much functionality other than decoration or condensed storage. Breaking a Redstone block would give back a Redstone block, and you can revert it back into nine dusts on the workbench.
I also really like the way raw Redstone works --how it lights up when you step on it or strike it-- and I think Redstone blocks should work the same way. They wouldn't emit light if they're just sitting there, but they should light up when stepped on. They should probably be brighter than Redstone torches, considering they contain nine times as much of the stuff, but not as bright as regular torches.
It's actually not at all like a Redstone torch other than it uses Redstone and produces light (which is an effect of being made with Redstone). The main idea is that it provides a simple storage solution for Redstone dust which is already in place for things such as diamonds and ingots. The lighting aspect is a logical extension on the idea.
That's actually pretty win, the vertical wire idea. I'm one of those redstone dudes, though I don't use it for a calculator, but for a very long railway system where I input where I want to go, hop in, press a button on the wall and the cart takes me there. And though I don't have more redstone than I need, I keep finding it, so when I get the rail done, I'll start accumulating it and won't have enough space. Good idea, have a :GoldBar:, and stop thinking about new things to add to it, that will only make it Bad! It's good as it is!

Anyhow, post away, feedback is appreciated.
I support the hell out of this, just like lapis (that i never use) I'd love to store it in blocks
Sometimes when i get enough lapis blocks i actually use them for deco i'd love to see redstone follow suit
