I know that alot of people say things about the weapons of minecraft, and I've been thinking. Anyone ever used the "Weaponsmod"? It adds things like knives, crossbows, halberds etc. Well, why can't we have these things in game? Low tech items don't need to be so limited.
So the game can be simple. Why have a crossbow when you could just use a bow?
That is a valid point. But there would be differences between each weapon... I mean think about it. A warhammer would do more damage than a sword, but cost more materials. A knife would be the opposite. It isn't a necessity, but it's something to think about. It would be neat.

But really, a warhammer, knife, halberd, broadsword, ect. are all just more melee weapons. Minecraft, being such a simple game, doesn't need more melee weapons. The melee niche is already being filled by the sword.
Repetitive Inventory
Some people like the idea of adding Halberds, Katanas, Guisarmes, Batteaxes, Swords, Longswords, Shamshirs, Broadaxes, Scythes, Kamas, Franciscas, Maces, Warhammers, Gudendags, Scimitars, Spears, Lances, Javelins, Pikes, Longspears, Hookswords, Knives, Krisses, Chainswords, Morningstars, Tetsubos, Billyclubs, Truncheons, Bayonets, Odachis, Zanpakutos, Zweihanders, ******* Swords, Great Swords, Doublescythes, Rippers, Chainsaw Blades, Chain Axes, Whips, Spiked Chains, Throwing Hammers, Rapiers, Mauls, Greathammers, Augerhammers, War Picks, War Clubs, Rods and all other sorts of weapons to the game, but the problem comes with making them all different. Since they would all work in generally the same way (they are all melee weapons after all) how would you make them different besides pushing them into a gigantic weapon stat directory, and even then, what's the point of it all when the only things that make them different are recipes, damage and attack speed, and small unimportant tweaks? It gets very convulted and eerily similar when all of the different melees are only stat-swapped versions of the sword. It would be like adding a Bucket that only grabs water, a Bucket that only grabs milk, and a bucket that only grabs Lava, or a bucket that can get water or lava, but not milk, and a bucket that can get milk and water, but not lava. In the end, what's the point?
TL;DR: All the "different" weapons aren't that different, all the new items are weaker, faster, long-reaching, complicated or stronger versions of something that already exists.
There isn't too much reason for it. Yeah you can do weapons with different reach and damage but either it will make more sense to use one over the other in all situations or there will be no real difference. You either need to give us some stats or a better reason.

@ funkdefied They wouldn't all be necessarily the same. Example: A creeper comes at you, and you have on your hotbar for a weapon is a spear. And getting close isn't the best idea, because you have... lets say 3 hearts. So instead of going into your inventory to find a ranged weapon, you just right click and Bam! It throws the spear and it kills the creeper. The spear still takes damage and whatnot, but it functions as both a melee and ranged weapon, with minor drawbacks. It would do less damage than a sword in melee, but would reach slightly longer. It would do more damage as ranged, but wouldn't go as far. I did read that section, and well I don't mean to add EVERYTHING. Just a few special things.
@BadPrenup Well as I stated above with the whole spear scenario, some things would be different. And not everything would be added. Well apart from variety and different damage, think of it like other games. A sword would be in the middle in terms of damage and speed of swing, and a normally two handed weapon (Battleaxe, Warhammer, Etc.) would do more damage but slower, and a knife would be quick but does less damage, along with throwability (because everyone loves to throw sharp objects at animals, right?). So my idea might suck, or not have reason. But I at least have a smidge of creativity.

Similarly, a crossbow can just as easily be substituted with a regular bow. Kira already adressed this in this topic: Why Your RPG Ideas Will Not Work For Minecraft
