Iron can be made into iron blocks. Gold can be made into gold blocks. Diamond can be made into diamond blocks. Sand gets sandstone, Lapis gets its own block... Why not coal?
Coal blocks can be crafted with 4 pieces of coal shaped into a square.

Coal blocks look almost like a coarse, black cobblestone block. Coal blocks have a few interesting uses. Like netherrack, coal blocks stay on fire until the fire is put out manually or with water. Coal blocks disintigrate when placed into lava, which could be used creatively to make mob traps. Coal blocks can also be used as fuel for 36 smelt, which actually gives 4 free smelt for the price of investing the coal. They can be naturally, though uncommonly, found under layer 48. They require a stone pick minimum to mine.
I haven't thought of anything coal blocks themselves can be used to craft yet, but how's the idea?
Coal is just really old wood isnt it? so it isnt a metal and cant be made into a big block ;P
Well, neither is diamond, wool or gravel, but we do it anyway! I think this is an excellent idea. If we make it very black it will also be great for pixel art, since the darkest block is currently black wool, which is really just gray. I think the block should require 9 coals to craft though. A for you, or rather, a !
This is not a new idea. It's been suggested before please use the search feature.
if everyone used the search feature to look for previously posted comments THERE WOULD BE NO NEW POSTS
Incorrect. There would be fewer posts. Much fewer posts. That would be good, as then the forum would not be crowded with crappy/already suggested ides if Notch ever reads them.
