I just think shields would be a helpful addition to Minecraft.
And before I get into detail, don't say that:
"We already have armor. Shields would be useless".
This does not effect your armor in any way. It's just to defend yourself. The purpose of armor is to help reduce damage - not to prevent it!
Now that that's clear, let's get to business.
A shield can be crafted like this:
[] []
[] []
(The wooden planks can be replaced by stone, iron, gold, and diamond)
Shield (stand-alone)
Left-clicking will do a shield bash, which doesn't damage the enemy, but instead, stuns for about 3 seconds. When an enemy is stunned. This will help escape from enemies. The bash will also push the enemy away, so, if you bash a, for an example, a zombie on a high cliff, it'll get knocked off and receive falling damage! :biggrin.gif:
Right-clicking, on the other hand, will allow you to put up your shield (for a short time) and block incoming attacks (like a skeleton shooting arrows at you).
Shield and Sword
First of all, to make a Shield and Sword, you need to make a shield and put it beside a sword, like this:
[>>-i>]
Or... [>>-i>]
(Arrow = Sword)
(Shield = Wooden Plank)
Now into detail:
With a shield and sword, you can block and fight your enemies with ease! Left-clicking will swing the sword, while right-clicking will bring up your shield. You can hold the right-click button to make your sword stay up. (unlike the stand-alone shield, where you can't hold it up for as long as you want)
The disadvantage is that you can't move (while having your shield out). I forgot to mention you can still move with the stand-alone shield if you are blocking. If enemies are all around you, you have to turn all around to block the incoming enemies. You can't bash either (well that's pretty obvious).
As always, wooden has low durability, stone has a greater one, though, with gold, you have a low durability, but if you have one with a sword, you can slowly move around, and of course - with diamond - you have the highest durability.
So...That's it. Thanks for reading. Please leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Already suggested, use the search please.
Also, we have enough armour already, I don't think we need more.
Also, you can just dodge skeleton's arrows, that's easy enough.
Right-clicking for the shield and left for the sword just adds in unnecessary stuff, and we would do better without.

Let's suffice to say I don't think using frickin flint and steel is going to light moss on fire...
