Reinforced Wood Shields should make up the "stone" tier for large shields, crafted like this:

Since a big shield made out of stone would be too heavy to be anywhere NEAR realistic, and also sounds kinda fragile. And why no wooden shields? They existed in real life...
Your idea has already been suggested before. Please make use of the search function or, if you are not in the searcher usergroup (which you can apply to by clicking on your user control panel and accessing the usergroup tab) you can use the google search also found at the default search link, which will provide a search specifically of this site that is quite effective.

Shields are "U" Shape and not a Rectangular shape.
They can be made of Stones, Irons, Golds or Diamonds.
What are the effects?
Small Iron/Steel Shield = 15% To Block Melee Damage 20% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows )and Absorb more Explosive Damage
Small Gold Shield = 30% To Block Melee Damage 35% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows )and least Absorb Explosive
Damage
Small Diamond Shield = 35% To Block Melee Damage 40% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows ) and most Absorb Explosive Damage
Large Iron/Steel Shield = 30% To Block Melee Damage 40% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows )and more Absorb Explosive Damage
Large Gold Shield = 40% To Block Melee Damage 50% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows )and least Explosive Absorb Damage
Large Diamond Shield = 50% To Block Melee Damage 60% To Block Range Damage ( Only Arrows ) and most Absorb Explosive Damage
Durability = Same as armors/weapons
Note: You cannot wield shield when you are holding bow.
Advantages : Huge advantage when going to a cave / adventure.
Disadvantages : Huge disadvantage for bow ( PvP )
Longer pvp battle.
