I think this would be a neat thing to have in Mine Craft, only with peaceful mobs or else this could get a bit complicated.
Ok, so lets take the newly added wolves for examples, now, some people may not know this, but dogs are the descendants of wolves, so a wolf could evolve into a breed of dogs, but theres a catch. Now, evolution takes a few billion years or so, give or take. And you probably are not Notch and don't live that long, SOLUTION, we have an item, this item is a little weird to explain, but there are Two versions to this said item, the golden age raw meat, and the old time cooked meat. Alright, the golden age raw meat as a crafting recipe should look like this
now what this will do is De Evolve a creature that is friendly, maybe even a mob, but thats up to the Mine Craft team.
Sorry, if I have a wolf, and I feed him this meat, it will turn him into a wolf pup, the wolf pup is small, and can be put on your head like a hat, the bad news, the animal will lose most of his bite and and his bark, but will be more happy just telling you that there is a skeleton over there through a whine, and zombies, and even the creeper if close enough, through a high pitch bark. Of course theres a snag here as well, he don't like dark, if it is mildly dark, the poor pup will shut up and whine, and bark at complete random. This, I feel evens out the bonuses. The amount of damage the pup can do is Half a heart, hes a pup.
Now for the Old Time cooked meat, it looks somewhat like this.
Now this will age the regular wolf to and grampa wolf, this wolf will not warn at any sign of attack, he has low defense but the most bite then any before him. Of course, he can't travel very far before becoming tired and lying down for a second, and yes, a full second of the poor guy just sitting there, I'm assuming that anywhere from 200 - 250 blocks is when he will need to rest. Again, I'm no developer, so they may change the numbers if need be.
Damage = 3.5 hearts, hows that sound?
Now, feed the old guy one more to get the full pledged dog, the dog has the highest defense out of the three, but isn't as powerful as the regular wolf, but not as weak as the pup. so about 1 heart per hit. He will bark out figures despite how far they are about as far as you can see them too. Based off of the pitch of the bark, low for spider - zombie, medium for skeleton and a high pitch bark for Creeper. Issue, he likes bones, his ears will show ears will determine if he needs bones or not. The higher up his ears are, the least amount of bones he will need, the lower, the more he needs.
Well, thats all I got for you right now, more then likely your not going to see more on this, but do enjoy this.

Edit.
Where the damn 'like' button when you want it?
At least we can all agree on this idea is, obviously, powered by a potato battery and is not a miracle.
